I've just found a tiny snail in my tank. I've got no idea how it got there - I haven't added new plants or anything for weeks! My platys are trying to eat it. Should I take it out? I don't know what to do. Never had snails in my tank!

Snails can be on plants for weeks with out even seeing them... So they have most probable come from adding new plants to the tank. They can be the size of a pin head.

Thanks :) should I take it out or will it be ok to leave it?

I don't see a problem with leaving it - they're good for munching on waste as far as I've heard?

Its entirely up to you, if and its a big IF you only have the one snail then you should be safe from future snail. population explosions. If however you have more then one, then they will breed and breed and breed.

Hmmmm, I've only spotted one so far so hopefully there aren't any more. Thanks for the help

I would take it out, before you know it you have thousands of them in your tank and you can't get rid of them very easily. There may be eggs on your plants, hence why you havent seen it for weeks.

If you leave it in I would suggest getting some assassin snails for when your population sky rockets ;-)

Normally snail populations will not skyrocket if you do not overfeed the tank.  They can be useful for clearing algae and leftover food in the tank.  I would say leave it be.  I have snails in all my tanks and I do not get over run unless I overfeed and then if I do, once I get everything back under control the snail population will get back under control as well.

I wish it was that simple with regards to snails. I don't over feed my tanks but the snails still get out of control (mainly the Malaysian trumpet snails), I put it down to them having the live plants and natural timbers to graze on in my tanks.
I am in the process now of trapping out the pest snails and introducing wanted species of snails that either don't breed in fresh water or are hard to actually raise the young, in the hope that these harder to breed snails will fill the void the pest snails are currently filling and prevent the pest snails from over breeding again.

Thanks for the advice guys! I've just bought an assassin snail today as I noticed a few more of the pest snails. Hopefully this guy will help sort them out :)

I would suggest getting a few, my assassins still havent completely removed all of my pest snails (I have around 20 now) after months. If you get say..2 more in a few months you will start seeing some cute baby snails hanging around. Im excited, one of mine hasnt moved much for well over a week until today when she revealed 26 eggs ;-)
