I am new to keeping platies, I had over looked this fish in the past and am now dipping my toes in as a platy owner. So my question is is this fish i have a male or a female is clearly has a gonopodium but it also looks like it has a dark gravid spot! What? Is this constipation, coloration or could this fish have had a sex change? I have had it for three days & it came this way with the black 'mark'... Thanks for the input
I can try and upload a picture soon but I am using my iPad right now and need to get a picture with my phone

if it has a godopodium it is and always was a male. If the previous tank he wasn had dominant males, he probably didn't want to show that he was a male and thus mimic a female platy by not having his godopodium obvious and kept the more female shaped anal in from birth. I don't know about the black spot, my males you can't see past their pigment. could be food or guts or something?

hi theDutchess and

 to TFF!
If he's got a gonopodium - definitely male as already stated. The dark spot could be faeces and does not necessarily mean he is constipated. Have you got a picture you can post? It always helps.

They ain't wrong! Gonopodium = male whatever else you observe. The Gravid Spot is not exactly a myth, but not a reliable way to tell anything.

The black spot might be some faeces, or it could even be a mark on the skin that looks like a gravid spot?

Ok so I couldn't get a much better pic if I do later I will upload it thanks for the quick replies

Don't need a better picture. That's a gonopodium. That's a male.

Thanks You guys! Appreciate your help! I thought it was a , male but the spot just threw me off! ;)

Actually I was thinking....I rescued a platy from one of my friends friends tanks. The ammonia was so high that it was eating away at the fins. Most notably the anal fin and a little on the tail. The anal fin was withered away to the first few spines and a little bit more right at the base...resembling a godopodium.

But your fish looks bery healthy and GORGEOUS! I'm still certain its a male unless perhaps you see his other fins aren't in tip top shape?

Caudal and dorsal both look fine to me. 'S a male, innit!

Thank you Fish Crazy and yes I am thinking that he is a male now (for sure) b/c all of his other fins as the_lock_man said look good thanks so much guys

His markings actually show he's a Mickey Mouse platy! If you turn that picture so the fish is on his head you'll see it at the tail end.

Ya I think he's a blue mickymouse high fin, he was just labled a high fin @ my petco
