I was given two fish from a friend that were offspring from a pair he has, i havent been able to reach him and would really like to know what type of fish they are... I know they are young but hopefully someone will have a clue. Untitled copy.jpgUntitledxxxx.png

Most likely apistogramma cacatuodies, or at least least in that complex. South American dwarf cichlid, prefer soft acidic water.

Google them and you'll be blown away by the adults.

They look like A. cacatuoides to me too. My sister and I were just browsing these for her new tank too. Funny how that works. Hope these are in fact A. cacatuoides, as they are stunning fish.

also is there any way to tell male from female or do i just have to wait till they mature?

Best bet is to wait until they grow up. Females will be about half the size of males. Males will be about eight cm long. Males will also be vibrantly colored while the females will be a softer yellow. Females have a very clearly black line running horizontally across the length of their bodies, but I think the young ones do as well, so it's best to wait and see to be sure.

That's what my research suggested anyway. I could have buggered the whole thing.

Once they settle in a bit the sex difference should be really obvious. Google images will help with that.

They are Apistos but not Cacatuoides - the tails are wrong and some of the markings are quite unique - the black line above the face. Maybe Apistogramma Viejita?
