we are wondering if we have a pregnant platy or not. we're new to all this but noticed one of our platy's looks bigger from when we first brought it. we have a total of four platys. this one tends to stay apart from the others. chases them off if they stay near too long. not sure what other info you need. any advice will be very helpful. thanks ~dodgegmc

I've got no experience in platies, but the general rule with female livebearers is this: if there are males in the tank with it, or it has ever been in a tank with a male, it is probably pregnant.

cezzaXV... thanks for replying back. we thought we had bought all males. now we think a female got mixed up in their tanks. we jus want to do the right thing and be prepared in case she is about to have fry. appreciate the advice.

If its staying away from the others then that most likely means its pregnant and is getting ready to give birth. I was told that if a male platy was in a tank then removed and then you add a female platy, its quite possible that that new female could get pregnant. Its pretty easy for a female platy, swordtail, mollie, guppy, etc to get pregnant just because the way they reproduce. If you dont want the babies then dont feed them baby food, just keep doing what youre doing. The mother or father will eventually eat the babies and same with the other fish. If you want the babies then take them out or the female out immediately once you think shes very close to giving birth.

northeastfisherman... tyvm for the advice, I will have to keep that in mind for the other species as well. again, thanks for the reply back.
