Hello,

I'm making a tiny sponge filter to use in case of emergency or unexpected fry.

I found all the materials I need for the small project, I'll put a small airstone in its lifting tube, but the only suitable sponge that I could find around here is 1.5" thick.

Is a 1.5" high sponge filter functional?
will there be enough pulling power to make water pass through the sponge into the tube?

Here are pics of the sponge in the horizontal position , the tube will only be able to be inserted 1" inside.

If this won't work. I can either put the sponge in a vertical position, but this will only leave 3/10 " of sponge thickness at the two sides.

Or I could silicon two squares of sponge one on top of the other to achieve the rquired height , the upper one will be drilled for the tube and the lower one will stay as it is.

AND... NO , I can' t get a bigger piece of sponge right now, we're on the border of a war zone and getting anything in the desired dimentions is very hard.

What do you think is the best option ?

Thanks!

Can you get hold of a plastic cup or similar container? Then you could put the tube in the cup and fill with filter media using something like gravel to hold it down.

Hello,

I prefer a sponge filter rather than the box filter in case I had a batch of egg layers' fry. They won't get stuck in it, and it provides a food source with all the little bugs that grow on it. Besides, it will blend better in my community tank (where it stays when I'm not using it elsewhere to keep it cycled).

Anyway, I'll keep on hunting for a thicker sponge. But I was wondering if it's safe to put a small piece of bathroom ceramic in a fish tank? I need it to hold the sponge down.

Thanks!

I would silicone the two sponges together, would make for a better proportioned sponge. Just make sure you only silicone a thin bead around the edge of the sponge, don't spread it all over the surfaces that are sticking together.

I guess ceramic, provided it is cleaned of any soap etc would be fine.

Thanks exactly how I was planning on siliconing the two pieces, otherwise the silicon will prevent water from passing between the two pieces.

Thanks.
