Set up the tank.

10/9/2012
Tested water. pH 7.0-7.2, GH 7-8. Temperature hovering around 78-80 degrees. Brought ammonia levels up to around 5 ppm.

Ammonia was processed down to approximately 1ppm. Brought it back up to around 5ppm.

Hi. I also started my first fishless cycle just a few days before you, and am at a similar point now (topping up ammonia, nitrites increasing, nitrates starting to show). I just started posting a chart of my data every few days in the New Aquarium section of this forum, hoping it will help others who are starting out, but mostly to get some advice if/when needed from the experienced fishkeepers on here. I've done a huge amount of reading up on the nitrogen and fishless cycles, now just keeping my fingers crossed for a "text book" cycle! Good luck with yours.....

Thanks. :)

How's your cycle doing? Thought mine was good seeing ammonia drop and both nitrites then nitrites showing, but added ammonia back to 4ppm and nitrites and nitrates have dropped to almost zero?!?!?! Guess I just need to wait a few days and keep testing......

Yeah my cycle is goin' pretty good. There's some nitrate, but my ammonia is still taking more than a day to be fully processed, and my nitrite spike hasn't ended.

Zero nitrates within 24 hrs confirms I'm done! Quicker than expected after slow ammonia phase. Only been dosing NH3 to 2-3ppm rather than 4ppm though, planning half to three-quarters stock initially. Will be doing 90% water change Saturday, transferring my skirt tetras from their 20 litre, and adding corys, cardinals and shrimp, on Saturday/Sunday. How's your cycle going?
