Does anyone use this in there tank to keep clear, if so how often? I had gotten a bottle from a Friends but I did not know if it was a good product and if it really helps.

I got some with a tank I bought, still in the cupboard. Regular water changes are the best way to control the build up of nutrients and cleanliness.

Water changes every week and maybe add some carbon to the filter

ok newbie here. So carbon how do you do that. What form does it come in what part of filter. The blue ones I change or the other black part that I do not wash

I don't have any carbon in my filter and I've never had any troubles with water clarity.

What EXACTLY do you change in your filter, and how often? What is this black piece, sponge? Do you use any filter floss in your filter?

Terry.

The carbon will be the loose granular material in the middle of your filter pads on that filter. Don't worry too much about it. The carbon in a filter pad is probably useless after maybe 2 days. In essence you are running that filter without carbon unless you are some kind of fanatic about changing filter media. Carbon serves a "purpose" to remove odors and medications and can remove some of the color that comes from driftwood. It is not really needed in a well maintained tank and would require far more than you get in that filter pad to really do much good. Instead, focus on doing water changes as needed and rinse out old filters rather than replace them in order to maintain your biological filtration.

this helps alot... I am more of a freak about keeping water changed so I am not worried about that part. So really I can use that filter a little longer then 3 or 4 weeks. Maybe like you said rince itout in some old tank water when it looks dirty....

Nice to know I think I have it down.. I think I am headiing in the right direction. :) Now t round out my number F to ma so they be nice to each other ...

I have used that kind of filter material for well over a year before a change. When it starts to plug up, I simply rinse out the pad in my old tank water during a water change before I pour the water down the drain. The pad then goes right back into my filter for re-use. Please recognize that the only cycled material in that kind of filter is that tiny pad. Even when mine start to fall apart, I just cut up the filter material and place it inside a new filter pad where the carbon was placed by the manufacturer. That way I don't lose much of my cycle when I am forced to replace a pad.
