Hello, I have a problem with one of my Zebra danios. It looks like it has something stuck in it's mouth. At first i thought it was food, but it looks green, like a narrow leaf sticking out about 1mm. It tried to eat but was unable to, and is hiding among the plants. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks John

I realise this sounds strange but has anyone seen something like it before? It's horrible to watch it try to eat and being unable to. I am worried it will starve to death. I have three others all doing well. I have looked after them really well, keeping the water safe while the tank is maturing. I tried netting it to dislodge whatever it is, but being so small and it struggling it was impossible to do anything. I there anything i could do?

The fish managed to dislodge the blockage and all was well for a few days. I think the fish is going to die though as it is just drifting in a listing position. I have had to hold it in the net to stop the others bothering it. It does swim but cannot balance now.
I feel somewhat to blame by cycling with fish, as they have been exposed to constant low levels of ammonia and nitrite, just tested 0.25 on both.
I would like to ask ,what can i do for this fish, and do it's actions indicate it might not last long? Thank you.

I know nothing about danios so I can't help on the breed of fish. I sounds like it been nibbling on plants and got some wedged. I had a platy once that choked on a blood worm so I know it's possible for them to get things stuck. My platy died very quickly but it sounds like your lil guy is trying.
If it's lost it's balance it could be that it's swim bladder has been affected. Try looking up posts on that. It may be that it can't be saved and nature will take it's course.

I've been treating the fish for swimbladder disorder but it's not responding. It can only move eraticaly and has no balance, and just rests on it's side now. I think the kindest thing to do would be to administer clove oil and end the suffering. It can't last much longer, it has not eaten in over a week. I don't want to do it, but it looking very ill and i really don't think it has much hope of surviving. Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks, John

I would and have used the clove oil at this stage. It's very sad but like you i hate to see them in distress! You've done a lot to try to help it survive.

I have had danios in the past with serious swim bladder issues, literally flailling around the tank unable to swim in any direction. However, the fish made miraculously recoveries on their own (no medication).
I would leave the fish alone to see what happens. There may not be any reason to euthanize currently.

Thanks Zoddy. I could just leave it to nature and hope for a recovery like you saw, but it's not eating at all.
I would think it's getting too weak to recover, but i don't know much about these fish. Were your fish eating through all the trouble?

I don't disagree ZZ. I've done both and have seen some recover, but when it's gone on for quite a while and they are obviously deteriorating I can't watch them suffer. It's a very personal thing I suppose, but I wouldn't want to be seen as suggesting euthanasia every time a fish gets a bit off colour.
the fish I had could not control their swimming at all. They'd plough into the gravel, rolling around all over the place.....there is very little chance they were able to eat.

That's exactly how mine is. I'll give it a bit longer to give it a fair chance.
