I've got a 6 week old 225l tank which is great, however the plants have really been struggling. Any grassy ones have died quite quickly (all off the ones in the photo have been replaced), the ones with bigger or darker leaves seem OK. There are plenty of fish and it is cycled so should be a good supply of nitrates.
Could it be that the activated carbon in the external filter is taking out all of the nutrients that the plants need? If so, what would you recommend as an alternative - I have three layers, each with sponge and 1 with porcelain, 1 with balls and 1 with activated carbon. The filter then discharges through the hood of the tank which has more sponge filters so there is plenty of surface area for bacteria (this also avoids more pipes in the water). Or would it be better to just remove the carbon and not bother replacing it?
