I've attached two pictures of one of my angel fish. He is small, his body is probably only 1 1/2 inches. Could you take a look at his gills. They are red. He is active, eats like a pig and seems fine. My other angels are not like that. The tank is only 4 weeks young and I am currently treating with salt because of Ich. My sweet daughter surprised me with two fish! They have ich on them. So, I decided to check with you guys/gals to see if there is something wrong with his gills. Thank you Jaime

ok, first things first. Are you aware of cycling? If the tank is only four weeks old did you either cycle the tank with ammonia first or add fish straight away?

If you've not heard of the term 'cycling' before then have a read through the beginners section, there's plenty of info there.

If you did add fish straight away then your filter is not 'mature' and has little to no capability for processing fish waste (particularly ammonia) and this could be causing the redness in the gills.

Do you have a test kit for testing the water conditions? If you do, please post the results for ammonia and nitrite.

Yes, I cycled the tank with ammonia. I meant that I have only had the fish for 4 weeks. Sorry about that. The little guy was like this when I bought him though. I just got back from buying test kits and I will test the water on my lunch hour and let you know the levels. Thank you

Here are the water parameters:

Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
Hardiness - 75
Alkalinity - 40
PH - 7.2
Ammonia - 0

thank you

What did you use to take those readings?

It's difficult to see from the photos but isn't it just a deformity of the gill flaps, i.e. they are partly missing so that the gills are showing? If so it's no problem. Or are the gills actually swollen and protruding from the gill flaps?

Sorry, don't remember the name if the kit for testing. I got it at the lfs. The gills are not swollen or protruding. He acts just fine. Just none of my others angels gills look that way and I didn't want to ignore it and find out that he had flukes or something else.

I can check the brand of the strips when I get home that I used for the readings. Thank you
