Whilst looking at my tank this morning on of my BN was sucking the glass on the front of the aquarium and her stomach is very swollen and her anus seems to be very red, i could get a picture as she swam of in to the plants by the time a grabbed the camera.
any help would be great.

Tank juwel lido 120
Very heavily planted aquarium with lots of caves and hiding places

Shocking:

6 leapard daninos
1 betta
4 BN catfish
6 assassin snails
3+ cherry shrimp breeding like crazy

Tank stats:

Temp 25c
PH 6.5
Ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 30
Tested weekly

Tank maintance

2x 25% water changes per week.

Just done a 30-40% water change

sounds like she has just spawned for you :) the water change bust of got her going usually does congrats too you if she did spawn :) is there a male in the tank ?

and is there any caves pots ect ?

ok just seen you already stated there is caves if there is a male in the tank and if he is in a cave fanning his fins then more than likely he is guarding eggs :) they are very good fathers

HI thanks for the reply, there is a male in the tank and plenty of caves.
I hope this is the case as i am really worried that it may be an internal problem, I just put couple peas in the as i read there help with any blockages.
I was also possibly thinking about going out and buying some eSHa2000 but i have heard it can kill or cause harm to snails, any thoughts on this?

Thanks again

hey i wouldnt use it heard that it does kills snails but and also if there is any fry in the tank just half the dosage :)

maybe try some courgette on a fork that should help :)

Thanks for the help and info, i will keep a close eye on her hopefully all will be ok

no bother :) glad i helped my bristlenose breed regularly and when one of my females anus goes like what you described usually she has just spawned :) hope this is your case to

Just seen my female again and she is just the same as this morning, i have been reading about BN bloat and the pics i have seen look just like my BN, is octozin safe with shrimp and snails?

oh flip she looks like she needs treated ! and yea from what i read octozin is safe with shrimp and snail

From what i have read i am pretty sure this is bloat and a very bad case of, and think the best thing to to would be to put her down.
What the best and least painful way of doing this?
Any help would be great.

many thanks

this is not from me i got this answer from yahoo answers :)

Clove oil (as used for dental pain - not the scented oil) and vodka.

Put the fish to be euthanised in a seperate container. Add a few drops of clove oil to the water. Wait for 5 minutes, then check on the fish. It should be asleep because clove oil in its purest form is used as an anaesthetic in fish surgery. If it's still moving, add a few more drops to the water, and leave for another 5 minutes. Once you're SURE the fish is asleep, add a few drops of vodka. Wait for 20 minutes and check on the fish for gill movement. If there's no gill movement after 5 minutes, dispose of the body - either by burying it, or by throwing it in the bin :-(

It's completely painless - the fish just goes to sleep. It also ties in with your habits. If you can't eat meat - I VERY much doubt you can decapitate a fish.

Thanks for the info I will do the clove oil and vodka method tonight is a real shame, the first BN I have lost to illness in my 8 years of keeping them, I Don't think chopping her head is for me and the mrs would kill for using her best knife (not a veggie).

But from now on My BNs will get pea once-twice per week, and one other veg once a week, and i am changing the staple food to JBL nova Pleco instead of just standard pleco tablets.
Plus going out to buy a load more bog wood today so that should get added within 8-10 weeks after socking out the tanning

sorry for your loss ! but at least your doing the right thing and in a humane way

and it looks like you have learnt from your mistakes and your even changing the fishes diet well done to you on that ! :good:

!00% changing their diet i have always feed them cucumber but only twice a month and the pleco tablets i have been using i don't think were up to the standard as other brands, so jbl nova pleco contains wood and other dietary requirements which the other does not plus adding more bogwood can't hurt hopefully.

Thanks again for your help

OH no,saw your picture, looks just like my new little Bn. Added start right, a teensy bit of aquarium salt, and Ph adjuster.
and said a little prayer. lol Removed her from the little beta tank I had set up. The female seemed to have no problem with her and I was looking forward to her having a tankmate.
TY for the pictures, looks like i bought a sick fish. Does anyone have any idea whether my beta girlfriend can get this?? And what exactly is this?? Parasites?? any advice would be great,ty so much,

Sincerely, primesspct
