Hi There,

I've been keeping tropicals for years, but usually community.

My friend emigrated and donated some fish to me, and I don't know what this beauty is. Can anyone help me identify the species of this fish?

I keep him/her with three Pictus in a nice 400l tank, and they all get on well it seems.

Any suggestions for other friends?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Looks like an ellioti, its a new world cichlid.

Thanks for your quick reply, that's ace. So many species...

Seems like Elliotis are quite hard to find, certainly none in the shops near me. I'll keep looking.

Thanks again.

aureus. very close to an ellioti but from a different catchment area.

stunning fish btw :good:

yeah, i would've said ellioti but it has differnt markings... so gold chichlid! you all got to it before me!!!

He/she is a beautiful specimen and you are lucky to have him/her!

Thanks all, really helpful. He/she is a fabulous fish, great to have in my study :) Just need to find him/her a companion.

Such as what? Thorichthys species are terrible with conspecific aggression, finding a female to go with the male will be a very hard task. I would suggest looking at a different fish altogether.

So it would be hard to pair firemouths?

No harder than any other Cichlid, but adding another adult to an already existing adult in a tank that it has been in for a while is hit and miss and Thorichthys are notoriously aggressisive amongst conspecifics.

Oh right, could you cross breed a Aurues and a FM?

Any Thorichthys will breed with another Thorichthys providing they pair.

I'm trying my luck with 2 juvenile Firemouths atm what i believe are male and female... Whether they pair or not is a different matter. lol.

How do you even sex Firemouths?

I have 3 and I desperately want them to pair.

They're very hard. lol. Females tend to be a little deeper and plumper but a tad smaller than the males. Males also usually have very elongated fin extensions than females who can have extensions, but most of the time not quite as ellaborate.
