I thought I would share with you how I am getting my Bettas into breeding condition, attached is a pic of 1 of the tank systems I use, it is a series of 3 interconnected 30l tanks,
on the left hand side of the tanks is a triple cell internal filter I have constructed it has 3 stages, first is a cell with glass bio noodles, second cell has no3,/no4 scrubber pads and cotton wadding + activated carbon, third cell has 150 watt immersion heater and a small 300 litre hour filter pump which pumps from the left hand tank to the right hand tank, then it just gravity feeds back through each tank via gravity trough 1 1/2 clear pvc pipes with elbows called crossovers. Each crossover has a small plastic mesh strainer fitted inside of it to stop
fry and small fish from getting into the other tanks. As you can see with this setup I have one of my show males Angus in the tank on the left , a mix of females in the middle tank.
and the tank on the right has a clear divider in it separating two of my other show males. all of the fish can see each other if some of the males or females are ready to breed the pheromones travel through each tank I feel this helps other females and males to come into breeding condition more quickly/easier. I can easily tell which females are ready to spawn as they try to get through the glass at the end of the tank where they can see the chosen male, then I simply put them into a prepared spawning tank and away they go. as you can see in this pic Angus has blown quite a big bubble nest, I also keep the water at 27.5 Celsius this helps the males to want to blow lots of bubbles and I also feed lots of live mosquito larvae to the females, this helps increase the amount of eggs they will spawn
