Afternoon all,

Got a question for those into making their own tanks... what profile do the edges of the glass need, should they be perfectly square or is it ok for them to be slightly beveled? In other words, can the join look like I've drawn up in the attached MS Paint file? In this case the black bits are silicone, the white is the inside of the aquarium and the blue/green stuff is the glass, in case it's not obvious ;)

I only ask as I got some glass previously from the same supplier near me for a bathroom shelf, and also a piece to cover my saltwater make-up tank, both have these nice beveled edges and wondering if that will make for a good joint in a tank?

While I'm here, when measuring up the glass to make the tank, should I allow any width for silicone? What I mean is, if my base is say 800mm x 400mm and I'm using 5mm glass, the long side panes I'm thinking would be 800mm long to match, but should I get the shorter panes made up as 390mm (400mm base minus 2 side walls) or very slightly shorter to allow for some silicone between the glass panes? I don't have a tank I can copy - all mine have a plastic or aluminium trim around the crucial joins so I can't take a look...

Thanks and a still-slightly-premature-at-this-point Happy New Year 2012 to all!

Paul

PS If it makes a difference, the tank will be a sump when it's made up - 800x400mm footprint and 400mm tall, filled between 350mm deep at water entry dropping to around 150mm (6 inches) deep at the return pump.
