went looking for a female bn for my 10 year old male, thought they might like to have a family and hes in a 200L + now so have the space. all the bns at the store were really tiny babies i cant tell whats what. thing is they were all spotty or patterned at least whereas my bn is plain black allover. im a bit confused now why hes different, does anyone know? couldnt find him in a quick search of google images

Can you post a photo? There are many pleco species and hybrids which grow bristles.

For a 200 litre, 3+ ft tank with "average" bristlenoses (some species are more aggressive and/or large), I recommend 1m 2f and 3 caves or so.. the females rarely bother with the caves, but it's good to give the male some choice.

ah i thought i added a pic. hes a rescue from a 40L with no cave and only fed goldfish food so at 10 years old i can see hes loving his new life he pushes my corys around a bit but they have relocated their hangout place, there are two caves at the mo and hes taken over both. hes not aggressive as such maybe just a bit pushy... so at 1 metre 3inchs you dont think its big enough? it is actually deep rather than long. im not fussed just seems like he would enjoy looking after some eggs hes always up to something

well he's BN sized at least, but hes defintely a lot darker than any other ive seen. though they can 'change colour', so could be something to do with the substrate ? either way, im not a fan of BN's, but that colouration makes it the best looking moustachio'd plec ive seen. :hyper:

lol hes funny, lived in the dark inside a filter all his life but def a beaut :)

I haven't got any free time to have a look for you, so you'll have to do it yourself… go through the list here and compare photos, post the list of species which match: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/index.php?genus_search_type=is&genus=Ancistrus&species_search_type=is&species=&task=Search

Here is a link to the thumbnail page for all Ancistrus species on PlanetCatfish. There are 147 listed but only about half provide photos, the rest are labeled "No Imaged Available". If you click on any of the thumbs it takes you the that species page.
