Breeding My Discus

AAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!! Dam and blast and @#$%....... Just came back home, and the parents munched the fry again! .......... Rescued a few that were hiding behind the filter uplift, and have quickly rigged up a artificial rearing "thingermy doodah", and made up some egg yoke and whey protein and cooked it on an air stone. Never done this before, so total guess work! There is some dude in Canada who has it all worked out, and rears fry artificially, his names Big Tuck, but I don't know him to ask about it.
I so thought I had it all going so well too

Put the pair in the main tank, and instantly the female started courting another male....... the old floozy! He would be much easier to work with as he is a dark coloured Turk (and no he is not Turkish!), although I hear he makes a mean kebab. So I could try again with him, but I don't know what fish I would end up with and I wanted pure bred not cross breeds....................

If I can get these remaining fry big enough to eat newly hatched brine shrimp, then at least I will have salvaged something!

OK..... Here is a picture of the guy she wants to have an affair with............ The questions are:


1. Should I give it a go with them.
2. Should I try again with the original male.
3. Should I call time on proceedings.

Answers on a postcard to......... In all seriousness what do you guys think? As frustrating as it is I am still willing to keep going with it if you think I should?

Do these fish pair up for life or will they breed with any male ?

if she will go with different males then i say let her pick her mate for the time being and she can gain more experience being a momma. dont give up, just try different things. if all else fails then try a new female.

Normally they do pair for life, but that Turk male is very assertive and he wants her. I might not get a say in it anyway, as she is already starting to flirt with him, and her now ex-lover has been dumped! Maybe Turk boy has a bit more Shish Kebab in his pants!

OK. So I have a love nest ready for them, just need to let the water settle for 24 hours. Here we go again!

I did look into artificial rearing, and it all looks pretty straight forward, and almost guarantees that the once the eggs are laid I would get a full batch of fry. However, and to be honest, it won't be the same. I love to see the little fry being nurtured by the parents. So I won't be going down the artificial route. I just need to be patient and persistent. I have lowered the TDS of the water in the nest as far as I dare, and hope this will aide fertilizing the eggs, and still using peat in the filter.

Oh no, I hope you can salvage those few remaining fry. What a heartbreak after all that work. Keep us updated on your progress. I think it's worth trying again with either male and maybe if you did want to try again with the same male then maybe it is worth trying to artificially rear them just to get the purebreds. But maybe it sounds like she has already dumped him anyway?

i would definatly not give up in this. youve come too far to claim defeat. Itll happen soon enough. probably not your fault anyhow... the fish just arnt ready for it probably.

I think he is looking for her, and wondering where she has gone, as he keeps swimming around the tank more than any others. I do feel a little sorry for him if I am honest.
