Hi all,

Ive never been on this site, so Hello!

My husband has bought a pleco today, we brought her home and she has so far, had 3 babies (shes been in our tank about 1 hr).
I just wondered if I needed to do anything for them or mummy, and how many she is likely to have as she has a rather huge belly!

Also have attached a pic as I wanted to see if anyone could tell me what kind of Pleco she was please she doesnt look that big in the photo but she is probably around 20-25cm long.

Thank u!!

Are you sure that she is having babies. What other fish do you have in the tank. And welcome to the forums :hi:

Oh. Didn't see the last part. To me she looks like a common pleco

Yep definitely we have other catfish but apparently he is a boy, erm and other fish (cant remember the name of them but their nothing like the pleco.)

Unless I'm sorely mistaken plecos are egg layers, so she shouldn't be 'having babies' at all. Also, apparently commons are quite hard to breed in captivity. If you have fry they're coming from somewhere else.

+1 I think the OP has a livebearer in the tank

Or has some cories that are spawning

Heres a pic of one of the babies!

Do you have another Plecos that could have laid eggs before that one because Plecos are egg layers and they can't be laid and hatched in that amount of time

We do have another pleco, im not sure what sort it is though do you think its the other one?

I just presumed it was the new one as shes rather fat and the babies have been swimming round her.

I believe newborn pleco fry still have a yolk sac attached, like this:

So if they are indeed pleco fry they were laid some time ago.

Oooh :S confused.com now! Lol apparently there are now 4 babies
this is her belly lol it looks full....

So is this impossible? It has to be another pleco?

I don't know enough to tell you whether her belly is bigger than it should be or not, but it really is impossible for a pleco to produce live young in one hour, so they must be coming from another pleco or another source (accidentally scooped into the bag with her etc).

Are you sure that they didn't accidentally scoop out some juvies when they netted her?
