Black Dragon Half Moon At Lps

Oh dear I paid $40 for an A grade blue hm dragon and $15 for blue hm female dragon......thats the going price for an exotic where I live as these types of bettas are as rare as dinosaur eggs. Although it was a lot of money I feel it was well invested because I now have over 100 fry from breeding the two. :)
WOW! $40 thats insane. Here in Toronto male Blue Mask halfmoon plakat bettas go for $10-$20. Female of any species go usaully go for $5-$8.
Oh! to live in Toronto...... :)

Some of the bettas I have seen on aquabid are well worth the $40 they are asking. I think that is where I am going to get my next pair. I am seriously thinking about breeding some.

If you are ever in the Mississauga region, you should check Cam's Aquatic Services. I got my two male Black HMPK from him, Cam's a great guy to deal with and is very generous with deals. They have some of the best Plakats at his shop, some of them even look show quality but priced at $15 its well worth it.The day I bought my blacks I believe I saw 2 male super red HMPKs $7 each, but the best betta he had in the store was there last month but someone purchased it. It was a purple-ish black Plakat betta with copper dragon scales.

Heres two pics of one of my jevenile male black HMPK bettas that I bought. He's all black with the exception of the colbalt blue rays that are starting to develope in his tail.

I'm jealous of all of you. The absolute lowest price I have found for bettas where I live is $25, average is $40 :(

lol, no worries theres probally a few betta breeders in your area who would sell for lower you just gotta look around online for local ads. Im getting a black betta breeding project started soon, who knows if it ever becomes really suscessful I think I'll start export and importing them. Best of luck to you.

here are my two black females I got 4 days ago from my local Petsmart. I was quaratining them in breeder boxes the first day, in my 50 gallon bowfront discus tank which I was treating with aquarium salt since my discus got into a fight. Also heres my melano HMPK male getting ready to breed with his giant bubble nest, I transfered him into a breeding box in his divided 20 gallon long so I control the nest after the bettas have bred.

Beautiful blacks!

...I bought my black HM male with magnificent fins comparable to my white Thai import HM, from a local LFS "they sent me 700 Bettas and now they HAFTA GO!" sale... For $3.50

The #29### moves every time I try to get a shot of his flare, but he is beautiful and so very black.

Unfortunately my research indicated that Melano (black) females are sterile though :( which is one reason I went with whites

Still very pretty girls!
(I breed black Arabians and Dobermans... I'm kinda partial to blacks)

Nice HM you got there! My males have grown a bit since I got them so I'll repost pics of them soon, turns out one's a Melano and the other is a Superblack. I'am planning to start a black betta breeding project soon and at good timing too because my two black males are now mature enough to breed. Luckly I got super black females which are fertile. ;)

NICE!
How do you tell the difference between a melano and super-black? What are the phenotypic differences to look out for (websites tend to be less than complete about such things... At least the ones I've been finding) or do you need to know the pedigree to know what it is?
...I may need to get me a couple!

From what I talked about with store owners who import their bettas from Thailand theres only a few differences between the Melano and Superblack strains. I been told to stay away from breeding black orchid bettas with Melanos since they are the type of black bettas that you dont what to introduce into your breeding gene pool. Black orchid bettas are the least favoured blacks because they have the most iridescence and there fins are very transparent.
Common Melanos will be deep black with blue iridescence on the body and have black fins with no colour at all, the transparency of a melano's fins will vary depending on batches.
A Superblack differs in terms of it depends on colour which give it its black base, some say a Superblack's colour was actually created from bettas with the copper gene but I dont know how accurate this is as Iam just getting into the betta scene and researching my self on the species. Hopefully I'll be able to validate this later on in the hobby, but so far UBF has been great for info since its a betta specific forum. Superblacks will be almost pitch black in body and fin with some blue iridescnece in the fins, I'am mainly basing this one my own experience since I've only seen Super blacks and own Superblacks with blue in there fins.
On a side note I do know that Melano black bettas are very hard to breed with expected results, the process involves the whole gene theory. When breeding Melanos, you need to breed two generations to get the disired black fry results but this too is complicated as not all the fry in the second generation will be black. This is ruled out though if you already have two pheno type black bettas.Usually Melano males are bred with steel blue females as they tend to produce very dark fry and have more of a matte base look and less iridescence. True black betta breeders are all like great magicians, they never reveal their secrets but when they do its usually not the truth its just what the general public knows already from research.
So far this is all the info I do know from researching and asking around on forums and petstore owners ( mainly Asian ones, preferably Thai or Vietnamese ones) not to racial or offesive though its just they have the most experience.
As a last tip I got from a Thai breeder, he told me if I want a suscessful black betta batch from breeding keep the disired pair in black water made from leaving Indian almond leaves in the water so the tannins leaches in to the water like tea. He also mentioned to use low lights as bright ones will leach colour and feeding live or frozen helps since some flakes or pellets contain colour inhancers which leach the colour out of your black bettas.
LOL, whoa that was alot to type in one response. Well thats all for now but if you need more info on black bettas I feel more than comfortable to contribute just PM me when ever you decide to start breeding blacks or get your hands on some.

Great info!

I'm still pretty new to Bettas, not fish or breeding, but
Bettas are definitely a "new flavor" I think I'm going to go against the addiction and see how it goes with the current set of solid whites and the single black male (melano x opaque white could be interesting)

I was familiar with the Indian Almond leaf water, and am fortunate enough that I know many local spots that have them growing (and fruiting right now) but I am not sure about how often I will be utilizing it for a couple reasons, but perhaps that deserves it's own thread...

I definitely look forward to seeing how your project turns out!
