I have one real fancy tailed male, very big yellow with black freckles tail, some of the offspring with his colors in their tails have split tails. are these tails normal ? the fish seem fast and healthy. thankyou in advance for any input. carol, the new fish breeder :S

Split tails is commonly caused by poor water quality if you done have fish that would nip them.

Water changes are best and I'll use melifix to stop any infections setting in.

+1, where poor water quality may mean soft water too.

On the other hand, I never had any luck with tea tree oil, so I recommend no medication of a very mild dose of a real medication.

Thanks Kat I meant myxazin although melifix is quite good, can you tell I've been up all night working!

These are babies that seem to be born this way, very pretty sides are diff colors :S

I would have thought it would be impossible to see whether a newly born fry had a split tail or not…

Tail shapes can vary quite a bit. If you have a delta tailed male the female may well not be another delta tail. A twin sword arrangement can also look like a split. If you have some of that genetics in your female or even being carried by your male a throwback can easily show up. If you are working with a well established line of delta tailed show guppies where you know the genetics of both the male and the female, see comments on water quality, disease and nipping damage.

there are three or four of them all with coluring from fancy tail spotted male with perfect split tails thet are a few months old will try to get a pic

Here is a picture, sorry not a very good one fish4 004.JPG

my cobra guppy had a split in his tail just come out of nowhere like that. was fine one day and then the next halfway down was split so i did a 50% water change, cleaned the filter in the tank water the opposite end of the tank to where the filter is placed (dunno why just seemed right) added waterlife acid buffer (humaquat). the tank then went really cloudy as expected and when it cleared up after a few hours the guppies tail went back to normal after a few days and its stayed that way ever since. if that helped an adult guppy it might help fry although i would not be able to tell if my fry have got split tails or not. so it could just be your fish if your tank is cycled properly.

Why are you buffering the water down? Adding commercial buffers leaves a high chance of a pH crash (which can kill fish) and your problem is likely to be due to the soft water.
