After observing many Bettas for a long time it's a no brainer that though Bettas will explore all parts of their tank/home, they do prefer to rest and sleep at the surface so they can gulp air from the surface without any effort. ESPECIALLY IN THEIR OLD AGE. I used to use plastic plants at just the right height to give them a sort of bed to hang out on and they took to that immediately. But it's hard to get plants just the right height for the size of your Betta and after all they do grow and that changes the height below the surface to be the perfect bed for the Betta.

So I finally decided to make some Betta beds. I bought a few fake Aquarium plants that had long soft leafy leaves and removed the base. Then using thread I threaded the leaves (via their stems) to some suction cups and then sealed the thread with clear tank sealant. Let the sealant dry for a few days and presto...you have a very comfortable bed that you can adjust the height so that your Bettas head is just below the surface when he sits/lays on it. All of my Bettas new and old, male and female, have immediately made these beds THEIR bed and THEE PLACE where they hang out when they are not in the mood to be out exploring or scavanging for food. The males will also blow bubble nests very near these beds.

The perfect spot for the Betta bed is a quiet place in your tank as far away from the water current of the tank filter. Just adjust the height of the bed so that when the Betta sits on it, his head will be just below the surface so when he wants to gulp air he simply looks up and gulps the air. I can't tell you how much every Betta I have had loves these beds.

Here are two pictures. One showing the beds from the side view of two tanks. The beds are to the extreme right rear corner of the tank and the leaves stick out horizontaly from the stem and slightly angle down further from the stem. The next pic shows Cutie Pie in his old age laying on his bed. These beds are even more beneficial to the Bettas when they get old and swiming up and down to the surface for air becomes a challenge for them. The older they get, the more they will hang out on their bed.

Good idea Whisper, I use a live lily pad plant in mine and they love to rest on it I named one of my female guppy lily because she loves to swim through the lily pads, rest on them and nibble off the flakes that fall on them

Thats a great I dead... Ive always wondered about that. My betta has a 20 gal high and I always see it struggling to the top. Someone said that is ok because its like exercise but I am not sure if its true.

Oh yes. The more excersize they get the better. But not when they get old like about at 18 to 20 months they'll slow down and especially the males with those big fins it's a real struggle for them to move around the tank especially in a current. I had a 20 gallon high and it's a great tank but it's real hard for the Old Bettas to get up and down in them so I switched to 20 gallon long. FYI, a 15 gallon bredder tank will fit perfectly on a 20 High stand and the top is the same size as the 20 high so you can reuse it. The only differemce in measurments is the 15 Breeder is the same hight as a 10 and 20 gallon long. The picture showing the two tanks that I posted has a 15 gal breeder on the right and a 20 gal long on the left.

Good idea! I'd prefer to use silk plants though, as long flowing fins don't do so well with plastic plants normally. My current boy prefers to stay on the bottom, but I have had a lot that hang around the top, so this would work perfectly.

I use silk too. The stems are plastic on the ones I use. And WHAT a beautifull Betta you have. Amazing colors and color configuration. Adorable!

It is true, they do slow down as they get older :) I swear my betta never slept uptil a few weeks ago! He was the most active betta I've ever had- constantly exploring his tank. Just the past three weeks has he finally decided to rest here and there- always in his floating log :D
I love the "bed" idea- its very sweet (and great for the bettas lol)

Ahh, I see what you mean now that I look closer. Thanks! He has very little white now, he's changed a lot in the last 3 weeks.

I us live water hyacinths, the plant floats and develops a dense rood bed that creates a super shallow pool surface. My live bearer fry love to hide in them, the Bettas love them as well.

I discovered this when i put one in my display glass and the Betta fell in love with it!

Great idea about the artificial plants though!
