Hi All, so I cycled my tank, all the readings were fine so went to my local pet store to get some newfish for it. Went to Oasis Aquatics in Manchester, the guy was really helpful recommending what fish to get and food wise.

Anyway I opted to go for 5 scarlet minnows, all seemed to going fine this evening until one somehow managed to jump out of the side of the tank with possibly the smallest gap in the lid.

Anyway, I wasn't aware that these fish are jumpers and the gyt at Oasis did say they are rare fish as I haven't beeen able to find anything online about them?

So I'm going to observe them over the next day or so to see if they jump out, fortunately the one that jumped out has been saved, he's moving gingerly in the tank, and was out for of a few minutes and it happened whislt at home. I have no idea what caused it to jump, the only thing I can think of is that I put the light on for the first time this evening, 5 hrs after i first got them, could this have stressed it out?

Anyway does anyone own scarlet minnows or has experienced the same issue?

If they have to go back, what do people recommend that I swap them for?

Appreciate all good advice.

Thanks

IME all Minnows are jumpers...though i know nothing about scarlet minnows, do you have any pics?

I'll stick some pictures up tomorrow, i'm not using the light at the moment just to settle them in again.

Also the water is a bit brown from tennins which were being released from a piece of bogwood i bought a week back, i had cleaned it but it was realsing quite a bit, anyway i've taken in out and cleaned it more and it will go back in next week.

Thanks for the advice Ianho

Oh and the scarlet minnows are a smaller version of the white cloud mountain minnows. The guy at Oasis did say they are rare.

Woke up this morning and checked the office to see if they were all doing ok, could only count 4 of them, thought to myself oh no not again, found the 5th one wedged behind the filter dead :-(

He was looking alright as well once we'd saved him!

Your scarlet minnows - are they Tanichthys micagemmae? Same genus as white clouds, different species. Also known as Vietnamese minnows or Vietnamese cardinals.
I've never seen any in the flesh, I would love some for my tank!

sorry to hear. You got any pics of these little fella's wouldn't mind seeing them myself :good:

I don't supose they look liek any of these do they? (ignoring the fact mine are a little fat at the moment)

minnows copy.jpg

they're all the same species- white cloud mountain minnows but sold under differant names

the top is normally called a vietnam minnow, the middle a long finned minnow and the bottom is the normal white cloud. The fish themselves don't know the differance between themselves and they have the same needs though vietnam minnows are suposidly a bit more delicate and prefure slightly higher temperatures to the original white cloud. So if yours are one of these just look up white cloud mountain minnows. :) hope this helps a bit

and the other differance between them- the price ;p normal white clouds and long fins round me are about £2-3 meanwhile the vietnams are £3-5.

Tank update, My 4 little Scarlet Minnows are al getting along nicely, so much so that I have spotted 4 little minnows on the surface! Have observed them over a few days now and the bigger fish seem to stay in the middle of the tank whilst the baby fist just hang out at the top, even when a bigger ones comes to the surface they scarper pretty quickly.

So with the new additions it's kind of thrown out my grand plans to get some tetras, a few shrimp and a micro crab but hey it's great to know they're settled in their new environment.

Sorry I've not taken any pictures i've just been too darn busy, I promise to do it soon.
