I've decided to have another try with real plants in with my cichlids. I know nothing about aquarium plants so I asked the lady at my LFS for some hardy ones - and although she had no idea what they were, she sold me 2 types that she thought to be tough. One is a leafy species and the other is grassy - I'm hoping someone can identify them for me from these pics. Thanks :)

the second is Mondo grass, which is a non aquatic plant. I'm not sure about the first, maybe java fern, but i'm really not 100%.

If we could have a bigger picture, please that would be helpful, especially of the first picture. Second picture is mondo grass, but I'm pretty sure the first is also a non-aquatic, as I'm not seeing a java fern growth pattern and the paler leaf veins are also suspect. Closer inspection would help.

Sorry about the quality of the pictures, it would only let me upload 100kb which is tiny. I've looked up Mondo Grass and it looks like you guys are bang on with that identification. I'm disappointed it's a non aquatic plant and miffed at my LFS for this.
lljdma06 - I agree the first one isn't java fern after checking on the net. I bet you're right about it being non-aquatic too, it stands up by itself out of water and looks like a houseplant to me. I'm going to take them all out and stick them in a pot instead! I might have to try ebay for some proper Java Fern - thx for the help ppl.

Found out the leafy one is a species of Syngonium which is a non-aquatic plant often kept as a houseplant, so both types of plant she sold me are non-aquatic, grrr. I've put the Sygnonium in a pot of compost and it's now on the bathroom windowsill and the Mondo Grass is planted out into a bare patch of soil in the garden with room to spread, so at least they're not wasted.
Those plants would have died and decayed at some point in my tanks - I didn't realize this was common practice in the aquarium trade, how silly.
