I have a 66L (2ft) Aqua One Tank, with Gravel a shipwreck, croc skull and a treasure chest. 2x plastic plants and 1 silk plant. I have a fluval u2 internal filter and an Interpet delta therm 100W heater. topped off with a 24W white/blue light over a condensation trap (no lid as yet)

Two weeks ago i filled tank with De-chlorinated water waited 5 days, took water sample to Pets At Home. They said fine to keep fish. Bought 3x Mollies added them as instructed. 2 days later all 3 fish were dead :-(

Ammonia had risen to 0.50ppm 0 Nitrites and 0 Nitrates

told to do a 60% water change. recheck water. Amm 0.25 Ni 0 Na 0.
told to do a 10% water change to get Amm down. (thought it should be going up?)

Joined this wonderful site to get proper advice.

Advised to do "fishless" Cycle. Ordered Ammonia (9.5%) from internet.

due to BHoliday. Amm won't be here till tomorrow. :grr:

Todays reading Day 1: Amm = 0.50 Ni = 0 Na = 0 Temp = 28 C

Day 2: am reading, Amm = 0.50 Ni = 0 Na = 0 Temp = 29 C
Delivery of Ammonia turns up ...eventually
afternoon reading: Added 4ml Amm = 6ppm
advised to do a small 10% water change to lower it down a bit.
pm reading after 20% w.change (due to 10% not changing it at all) Amm = 4ppm Temp 30 C PH = 8.3

Day 3: Pm reading (in good light) Amm = 4ppm (def) Temp = 30C PH = 8.0

Day 4: am reading Amm = 4ppm Temp = 30 C
also did some curious tests on tap water... Amm = 0 PH = 7.5 Ni = 0 Na = 0 as i've heard some have Nitirites in their tap water. So at least i know there is none in mine before i add to the tank.
Ho hum... *musical interlude* :band:
Day 5: Am reading Amm = 4ppm Temp = 30C PH = 8.0
Day 6: Am reading Amm = 4ppm Temp = 30C PH = 8.0
:tumbleweed: and another :band:

OK ... i have now started another tank (70L Super fish) i bought it as a job lot, with sand substrate and a Sunkun ornament Bell, mature media also, well it has gunk on it??!!
As advised i cut the sponge in half and added it to my first tank with a swop of one of the sponges from that tank.
Filled (also added 5L of water from Tank 1 to Tank 2)...dechlorinated and bumped up to 4ppm. now we wait again!

Tank 1 : as day 6 results above plus Ni = 0 Na = 0 when read pm after small change to replace water that went to Tank 2.

Day 7: Amm = 4ppm  Temp = 30C Ni = 0 Na = 0. Bit upset the media made no change

Day 8: Amm = 4ppm Temp = 30C Ni = 0

Day 9: Amm = 4ppm Temp = 28C *sigh* PH seems to have dropped again...to 7.5 ..is this normal during a cycle?????

Day 10: Amm = 4ppm  Temp = 28C Ni = BIG FAT 0. Disappointed in you tank 1!!

Day 11: Amm = 4ppm Temp = 29C Ni = 0. :sly:

Day 12:!!!! Amm = 3ppm Temp = 30C Ni = 0 Na = 0.25 ? is this possible?

I am starting to lose paitence with Tank 1...but the drop in Amm was how tank 2 started so..pleassssse let this be it!!! I WANT FISHIES! :sly:

Day 13: Amm = 3ppm Temp 30C Ni = 0 Na = 0.25ppm (its a very dark yellow, darker than the test card for 0...but not Orange like 0.50)
pm..reading Amm = 3-4ppm *sigh*

Day 14: Amm = 3ppm Ni = 0ppm Na = 0.25ppm (as yesterday)
No change again. :(
played about with tests and did a pm reading...PH = 8.0 (i think ... not clear) Amm = 4ppm Ni = 0ppm Na = 0-0.25ppm (again dark yellow)

*Day 15*: Amm = 4ppm Ni = 0.25ppm!!!(we have Nitrite! :hyper: ) Na = 0.25ppm
pm test showed Nitrites increased to 0.50ppm and Nitrates to 5.0ppm....BUT Amm still at 4ppm ??? :look:

Day 16: Amm = 3ppm (def looks a lighter shade of green) Ni = 2.0ppm :)hyper:) Na = 5.0ppm about bloody time Tank 1!!
pm test showed Amm = 3ppm Ni = 2-5ppm (rising) Na = 20ppm (risen since this morning)
PH 7.4

Day 17: Amm = 2ppm (dropped again) Ni = 5ppm (risen) Na = 20ppm (settled) PH 8.0 (back to what it was in the beginning)
pm test showed Amm = 1ppm (fallen from this morning) Ni = 5+ppm (SPIKE) Na = 30ppm PH = 7.4

Day18: Amm = 0.25(nearly there...) Ni = 5+ppm (spike) Ni = 40ppm (increased) PH = 7.4
pm tests showed Amm = 0-0.25ppm (couldnt decide) Ni = 5+ppm Na = 40ppm
First dose of 1ml of ammonia taking it to...3ppm

Day 19: Amm = 0 Ni = 5+ppm Na = 40ppm PH = 7.4 (so cleared Ammonia in 12hrs)
pm test not done as out but did dose up to 4ppm again with Ammonia.

**Day 20**: Amm: = 0.25ppm Ni = 0.25ppm Na = 30ppm (best reading yet Tank 1)
pm tests not done..but in light to this mornings reading added 1ml Ammonia.

**Day 21**: (12hrs post dose) Amm = 0.25ppm Ni = 0.25ppm Na = 20
pm test showed (24rs post dose) Amm = 0ppm :D Ni = 0ppm :D Na = 10 :X
dosed with 2ml of Ammonia....4ppm

Day 22: (12hrs post dose) Amm = 0 (so it does clear 4ppm in 12hrs) Ni = 5+ppm (but not Nitrite) Na = 80-160ppm
pm tests show(24hrs)Amm = 0 Ni = 0.10ppm(darker than 0..but not lilac) Na = 30ppm
Dosed with 2ml of ammonia.

Did some mid-cycle tests on my tap water:

Tap water: PH = 7.6 Amm = 0 Ni = 0 Na = 0
D/Chlorinated Tap water : PH = 7.2 Amm = 0 Ni = 0 Na = 0
def NO NitRates present.

Tank 2 : 70L Superfish with Aqua Flow 200 internal filter + heater, sand substrate and an ornament bell.

Day 1 : Amm = 4ppm Temp = 20C(set the heater to 30C, but may take time to reach temp)
Ni = 0 Na = 0.

Day 2 Amm = 2ppm :D Temp 29C Ni = 0 Na = 0. Pleased Amm dropped overnight, but thought i may see some Nitrites by now :S

Day 3: Amm = 2ppm Temp = 29C Ni = 0

Day 4: Amm = 3ppm ( again is it normal for the Amm to rise again? )Temp = 29C PH = again 7.5???????????????????
Day 5: Amm = 2ppm :D Temp = 29C Ni = 0.50ppm Na = 5.0ppm :D  Well done tank 2!

Day 6: Amm = 2ppm :D Temp = 29C Ni = 5.0 Na = 20ppm

Day 7: OK...one week in and results are GREAT!
Amm = 0.25ppm :kana: Temp = 29C Ni = 5.0ppm Na = 20.0ppm :cool: :clap:
indeed we have a spike!!

**Day 8**: Amm = 0ppm :D Temp = 29C Ni = 0ppm :D Na = 10ppm :D
Indeed the double zero's.....yayyyyyyyyy
Now added 2ml of Ammonia...went to 3ppm..added another 0.2ml..up to 4ppm...

now we wait......

pm test (12 hrs later) Amm = 2ppm Ni = 2.0ppm Na = 30ppm

Day 9: Amm = 1.0ppm Ni = between 2-5ppm Na = 80ppm (????)
pm test PH = 7.6 Amm = 0.25ppm Ni = 5.0ppm Na = 40-80ppm (????)

**Day 10**!!!: More double 0's... Amm = 0 Ni = 0 Na = 20ppm
added 1.4ml of Ammonia = 3ppm...roll on 12 hrs!!
PM test : Amm = 0.25 Ni = 2-5ppm Na = 40ppm Looking good!! :good:
bumped Amm back up to 2ppm (added 1ml ammonia)....roll on morning!!

Day 11: Amm = 0.25ppm Ni = 2-5ppm Na = 40ppm
bumped back up to 3ppm with 1.4ml of Ammonia.
PM test (12H): Amm = 0 Ni = 2.0ppm Na = 40-80ppm ..... BUT......PH has dropped to 6.4????
Added 1tsp of Bicarb to up PH and 2ml of Ammonia to take it up to 3ppm.

Day 12: Amm = 0.25 Ni = 5ppm (SPIKE) Na = 80-160ppm (spike) PH = 7.3 (after bumping with the Bi-carb)
added 2ml Ammonia -> took it to 2ppm.

QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS....know now to only add ammonia every 24hrs NOT 12hrs!!

pm tests showed PH = Buffered to 8.0 with Bicarb Amm = 0ppm Ni = 2-5ppm Na = 80ppm
added 2ml of Ammonia bumped up to 2-3ppm (want to do ammonia bumps in the eve as i have more time then)

Day 13: Amm = 0.25ppm Ni = N/T (as off the scale) Na = 80ppm PH = 7.4 (fallen since last night)
**pm tests** (24hrs since dose) show Amm = 0 Ni = 0 Na = 80ppm PH 8.0 (DOUBLE 0'S again)
so its clearing 3ppm in 24hrs.
dosed with 1.2ml of Ammonia to take it up to.....3ppm

**Day 14**: Amm = 0ppm Ni = 0.25ppm (oooh nearly) Na = 80ppm PH = 7.4
pm tests not done as i was out..not dosed.

**Day 15**: Amm = 0ppm Ni = 0ppm Na = 80ppm PH = 8.0
pm..no readings taken...but added 1.2ml Ammonia

Day 16: (12hrs post dose) Amm = 0 Ni = 2ppm :sly: Na = 80-160ppm :grr:
**pm tests** show(24hrs post dose) Amm = 0 Ni = 0ppm Na = 80-160ppm PH = 8.0 (stabilized) dosed with 2.7ml of Ammonia....4ppm

Day 17: (12hrs) Amm = 1ppm Ni = 5+ppm Na = 80-160ppm (groan)
pm tests(24hrs) Amm = 0 Ni = 5+ppm Na = 80-160ppm (nitrite still spiking)
Dosed with 2.5ml of Ammonia

OOOppppps i bought another tank.......60L, gravel substrate with used media in a fluval 2+ filter. 100w heater and a shark air stone, fake plant and a pirate sword.

Tank 3: initial readings after dechlorination... Amm = 0 Ni = 0 Na = 0 (as expected)
dosed with 2ml of ammonia to take it to 4ppm...24 hr tests begin.
NB: tank has no heater yet..but filled with warm water .. will get heater asap.
NNB: tank came with snails!!! ugh!

Day 2: Amm = 3ppm Ni = 0 Na = 0 ( dont think this filter was cycled..or they cleaned it VERY WELL )
pm tests not done as i was out...not dosed

Day 3: Amm = 3-4ppm Ni = 0 Na = 0.25 (again dark yellow, but not orange)
pm...no readings done as probably little change. NOT DOSED

Day 4: Amm = 3-4ppm Ni = 0 Na = 0.25ppm PH = 7.4 ( still need the Amm to drop)
pm.... Amm = 3-4ppm Ni = 0 Na = 0.25ppm PH = 7.4 (no change) NOT DOSED

Day 5: Amm = 3-4ppm Ni = 0 Na = 0.25ppm PH = 7.4 (no change)
pm.... Amm = 3-4ppm Ni = 0 Na = 0.25ppm PH = 8.0 (no change apart from PH) NOT DOSED

Great stuff :good: What you using as a test kit API liquid or strips?
i had been using the 5 in 1 strips...but it doesnt include Ammonia..so bought the more Acurate API Master testing kit (liquid)

Ok when you test your Tubes make sure you dont have the normal room lights on and try and do it near a window with natural light, sounds silly but Artificial light gives the tubes a tinge making the readings sometimes far out :)

Day 2 and my ammonia has at last arrived....smelt just like my daughters wee'y nappies
Calculated i needed to add 3.74 ml of ammonia..but hard to measure that in a syringe..so i rounded it up to 4ml.
This took the reading up to between 4ppm and 8ppm ... a bottle green colour. (so wish i could upload pics :grr: )
I have come clean with my Son as to where the fish went :-( . He wasn't as upset as i thought he would be. I also
explained the cycle to him...not sure if he understood as its taken me this long to understand it myself..but hey!
ONWARDS and UPWARDS x

Good luck, you'll be at this for a while. Have you checked to see if there is a member near you who could supply you with some media from their already cycled tanks as well?

yes i have but he hasnt posted on there sine May 09! :(

Reduce the ammiona hun if if its going near 8ppm it not a good thing and the wrong bateria can form, rather be a little under then alot over. Next dose try going for a smidge over 3ml should see you in the right place at 4ppm :)

which do you think it is?

Imo thats 6ppm ish, striclty my thing would be to do a little water change 10% to dilute it a bit, then when you redose try 3ml and re test aim for 4ppm and max 5ppm. What the calc does not take in account is the sutff in the tank, sand heater filter etc so thats why it might be a tad over. Still nothing to worry about no harm done yet lol

+1. you are looking to get 3-5ppm anything over & it can cause trouble. Its an easy fix, just do a small waterchange.
