Firstly, thanks to everyone so far who has helped me with my fish woes!
Some time ago I mentioned my guppies were flicking on the sand and someone kindly showed me in the direction of a product called Sterazin. Due to the dubious charms of online auction sites, I am still waiting for the meds and if I have not received it tomorrow I will be off to the lfs to see what I can pick up.
The reason for bothering you all again with this is that it seems to be spreading through the tank and I am worrying about what exactly the fish have and whether this is the correct medication.
A bit of background - since I bought 6 guppies about 3 weeks ago, one or two have been flicking and rubbing themselves on the sand substrate (it was only the two males to start with). Over the past week or so, the females have started rubbing against the sand and plants. Sometimes they do it a lot and just kind of jump along the substrate... It upset me today, however, to see one of my poor Cories rubbing itself on the sand. This is the first time I have seen any of the Cories exhibit this behaviour. The Guppies do seem to exhibit a kind of chewing behaviour - that's the best way to describe it - not sure if it's normal.
I note the Sterazin helps with flukes but I'm not sure it helps with things like velvet or ich. I originally thought it was some kind of fluke as I could not see any other external problems. Now, however I'm not sure. The Guppies seem to have quite a bit of yellow colouration on them - the females less so, but the picture shows one male and a female with the colouration. I have seen velvet describes as a kind of golden rust, which doesn't seem to quite match the colour I'm seeing.
So, what do ppl think? If they have been living with velvet for a few weeks, would they be sicker by now or dead? Could this colouration be Velvet or just normal colours (the male has always had a bit of yellow on him). Should I go ahead and treat with Sterazin when I can get some or would somethig like Protozin be more suitable?
