Hi,

I bought a Jewel 180 aquarium 3 weeks ago and I’m in the process of maturing the tank. This is my first experience of setting up a large aquarium (all very exciting!) and I would appreciate a bit of advice to make sure I am doing things properly, particularly since I plan to move my existing goldfish from their small tank into the new aquarium once it has matured.

My aquarium contains some plants (photo attached) and I foolishly forgot to write down the names when I bought them in the shop. Do you know what they are and if they need any special treatment? Some of them appear to be dying (the leaves are turning brown or transparent and are rotting away) and I have quite a few brown diatoms (I’ve read that these are common in maturing tanks and should clear once the tank has matured). At the moment I am only using the standard lights that come with the aquarium but have just learnt about the need for plant nutrients. I have read varying advice on plant supplements, ranging from Easy Carbo and Tetra plant Tetra min to the Aqua Essentials Aqua Carbon and Aqua Nourish products. Two aquarium shops have also recommended other products and so it is all very confusing! Which is the best low-cost option? Can my plants be saved or have I chosen the wrong ones for my aquarium?

Thanking you in advance.

OK the one in the background looks like some kind of Vallis,
The variegated leaf one is a terrestrial/marginal plant that will die off if completely submerged I beleive,
The third one looks like some form of elodea (or similar) but a simple stak plant with leaf whorls.

Elodea densa (not yours, but along those lines)

Twisted Vallis, Elodea and a non-aquatic palm. Take the palm out, pot it and put on your window sill, it will rot in the tank.

Thank you so much for the speedy replies. I'll have a read around for some more suitable plants for my aquarium (java fern seems to be popular in the forums?). Will the Vallis and Elodea require any extra nutrients to keep them healthy?
