This is a large gold barb who has obviously scratched himself (or been abused by his tankmates). Do you think he'll make it? he's been like this for about 3 weeks, and it seems to be getting worse not better. He's currently in a plastic breeder box, but when he's free in the tank he's hiding out.

I'm ready to euthanize him (humanely, of course), but am wondering if I'm overreacting.

Hi there,

I realise you probably don't have any other option, but that small breeding box won't aid his recovery.

If you wan't him to heal he needs a 'hospital tank' (I know, I don't have one either) in which you can add melafix, keep him in a quiet spot with some fake soft plants for cover.

Can grab some mature media from your own filters to kick start it.

Or you could just run Melafix through the tank? It isnt going to hurt any of the others!

I would say that if he is still eating, i would try help recovery, he is going to feel bloomin sore but have seen fish come back from far worse!

Looks like an infection as a result of injury be it bites or a scratch etc, so long as it doesnt go bright red or white and fluffy, i would use melafix, genius stuff on wounds, make sure your water is spot on and keep an eye out for sharp objects in tank or bullies!

:good:

A cheap 10 gallon would be easily enough and can be used in the future. I have a spare 5 gallon complete with a filter and heater just incase anything unexpected happened.

James.
