Hi,

My Java fern is turning see-through at the tips!!

I'm not sure what to do?

I've had it about 2 months. This happened in the beginning, but then seemed to stop and now it's getting worse again.

My ph is abut 7.5- 7.8, I've only got one light, a 20watt T8. I'm using ADA Green brighty step 1 fertiliser.

Any suggestions as to what might help?

I assume having your leaves turn see-through isn't normal??

thanks so much!

TC

Hi could you take a pic, sometimes they have slightly transparent tips when they're growing fast, not sure why they do it because it doesn't seem to affect growth... but it might be a deficiency so a pic would be helpful :good:

I'll try.

I was just trying to figure out how to upload a pic??? Do I have to upload one somewhere else first? I haven't done this before...

cheers!

It's not that easy to see but 2 of the leaves in the middle are totally see-through from the tip to about 20-40mm down the leaf.

Any ideas?

thanks!

Looks fine to me! :good: More nutrients may help, but not to sure about This. My java fern does this too and it has never seemed to be a problem

Cool, good to hear. I guess I'll just wait and see!

thanks!

How long does your fertiliser last? I looked at a 500ml and its not cheap, and is it any good? your java fern looks good to me. I have a large one but i'm thinking of using Co2 to keep it healthy.

Java fern doesn't need co2 at all... and co2 certainly complicates things.

ADA stuff is more expensive, I would go with tropica plant nutrition plus as its a good all rounder :good:

How bigs your tank, what lighting do you have and what plants do you have in it?

Its a 200litre Fluval Roma, twin 30w tubes so its well lit, i have jarva moss which is growing nice but my Ludwigia palustris is dying, I also have Java ferns which are doing ok the Co2 is on its way i will see if it makes any difference.
At the moment i am using Ferropol fertiliser.

I'm not entirely sure about this but I think that plant is fairly easy to grow and your fertiliser might just be micro nutrients such as iron, copper, potassium etc. It seems a bit more common in larger tanks that they need macro nutrients as well, which are nitrate and phosphate. Thats why I would recommend TPN+ because its one liquid with everything in... a 500ml bottle last me a few months in a 110ltr aquarium.

Have you got a picture of the tank?

If you want to go down the co2 route, imo you've got to either go for it or not bother.. which means you've got to fill your tank with plants basically. :p Also I wouldn't recommend co2 to solve problems cos it normally makes them worse lol.

pics would help :good:

The plants get some nitrate from the fish, right?

What brand is TPN?

The ADA stuff I've got is going to last for months and months. I went it to buy Seachem Flourish, but as a total newbie the lady in the shop talked me into this one. But I must say the plants seem much happier since I got it!

cheers

If you go to "Member's Aquarium and Fish Pictures" on this forum you can see some of my fish and the plants in my tank, i am commited now to Co2 its on order as a kit, wish me luck sounds like i'm going to need it.

Yep, sometimes fish waste is enough.

tropica plant nutrition - TPN+ is better as its got micro and macro nutrients..but your plants look healthy from what I can see. Don't get me wrong, the ADA stuff will be great...It just appeared to be a bit broken up and pricey when I last looked. Is it an all in one solution? Glad the plants are better :good:

Ok well, i'll have a look at the pics and hopefully all will go well. Hopefully you've got everything you need? canister, regulator, needle valve, tubing, no return valve, bubble counter, diffuser... drop checker, 4dkh solution...

You realise that co2 will make the plants want more nutrients and therefore ferropol certainly won't be enough. Then the algae will come :shout: Assuming its just micro nutrients! If its not then all should be ok.

edit: I had a look, but couldn't find a full tank shot. You have loads of threads on there :X

Nope, not all in one. The ADA seems to be broken up into 3 steps. I've got step one.

What brand is TPN? is that the brand, or the name of the product? eg is it a Sera product? Or Seachem? Or something else?

cheers
