Hey anyone and everyone ^_^

My local pet store got a trade in, and I just wanted him. He was so shy and looked a lil beaten up. So I took him.
Thing is, the pet store wasn't sure what he is, My friend says he's an american cichlid of some sort, she thinks he may be a firemouth ...

But I'm leaning toward a Veija Regani, just from some pics that I've seen.

Can anybody clarify???

Thanks,
Shaz.

A Cichlid, yes. What is your pH?

Oh, I see. Generally, cichlids need a higher Ph that is around 7-8

its african cichlids that typicly want the higher ph . thats deffinately a cichlid of some sort , but its either south or central american. i wouldnt start fiddling with ph. can you get a better pic of it out from under the wood?

So these were the best that I could do ... I can keep trying though, no probs if I can find out what he is :D
soooo, should i just leave the ph?

Your ph can't be 5 surely???

The fish is definitely a Vieja (or possibly a paratheraps) species and my guess would also be V.Regani, But only time will tell for sure

Why is that? I have a massive log in there now and been doing lots o' water changes, only thing now is to get it back up ... I know by reading now that I should get some coral rocks or ph up ... im just unsure of how much to get and if to slowly introduce the ph or if to just chuck it all in at the same time ...

But thanks heaps, I was thinking V. Regani as well, but then I suppose he's too small too tell yet too

what would happen if I let it stay low over long periods in time??

Well what is the ph of your tap water? (should be between 6 and 8.5) and unless your water is very soft I can't see how it would drop that far, even with bogwood. If it is soft however this could be a valid explanation but can be dangerous as it can encourages ph swings that are dangerous to fish

Also i notice you have sand in the tank, is it a particular old setup and is the sand stirred regularly? could you have had a ph crash or have old tank syndrome?

If your going to modify it again it is best to go the natural way, Coral/ocean/limestone rocks will all help to buffer the ph and hardness
Also just wondering where did the log come from? if its softwood it could be rotting, resulting in the large ph drop

wow uhm, No the setup is fairly new, just added the wood and rock recently... yes, I stir the sand at least once a week when I do my water changes/full cleans. I've been working a lot lately so haven't been able to go out and get more testers... should go tmr ... there is still so much that I don't know.
