[font="arial][size="2"]Please could someone help me with a problem one of my fish has developed. The fish is a Black Neon Tetra and as you can see from the attached picture, it has developed a very enlarged stomach area. It seems to have happened quite suddenly and has not reduced or increased in size since I first noticed it about 4 weeks ago. On the advice of my local fish supplier I treated the whole tank with a course of Interpet's Anti-Internal Bacteria no.9, and so far even after following the instructions very closely, it has made no difference to the fish. The tetra doesn't display any unusual behaviour - ie. still swims normally, and eats its food ok.

Tank size: 35L
pH: 7.5
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0.1
nitrate:10
kH:180
gH: 120
tank temp: 25.5C

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 12L weekly

Tank inhabitants: 4 Lemon Tetras, 1 Odessa Barb, 1 Tiger Barb, 1 Horse-faced Loach, 4 Black Neon Tetras, 4 Harlequins

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): None

ok well firstly get rid of the nitrites by doing a big water change. ;)
does it look see through or solid? what are you feeding them and how often?

Your tanks severely overstocked.
I would strongly advise reducing your stock for a 35 litre tank.

What do you feed your fish?
What does it look like when your fish go to the toilet.

Cook some frozen peas for a few minutes. Let cool down and pop out of shell. Chop into small pieces and add to the tank.
After an hour or so remove uneaten peas.

The dorsal fin on the fish in the pic does it have a whiteness to the fin.
Does the fin look like it has cotton wool attached to it.

Sorry I was looking at the other fish at the bottom of the pic.
The neon looks severely bloated.
Does the tummy look like a lump that looks hard.
Or does the tummy look soft like filled with fluid.

Thanks for the replies. The tetra's belly looks solid rather than fluid filled. There isn't a lump rather it seems to extend from mid way underneath to just before the tail end.

I feed once daily with a small amount of flake food.

Here's a clearer pic.

Hello Chris,
Have you tried the peas yet that Wilder suggested?

I may be wrong but that looks like it could possibly be 'dropsy' if it is then the next thing you`ll notice is that the scales will begin to look like a 'pine cone' as they begin to lift from the body

I`ve been reading around the net to try and help you and found a forum where someone else has the same problem, they are pointed to this:
http://www.jbl.de/onlinehospitaluk/perpicture/index.php?Step=3&GalleryId=2&klickedPic=031_b

I hope posting this link is ok as it`s not to another forum.

I haven't tried the peas yet but will tomorrow.

Thanks for the help......the picture on the site from the link you gave shows the same problem as my fish has almost certainly got - dropsy. The fish supplier told me this and gave me a treatment for it but it hasn't done anything.

Is it worth moving the fish into my spare tank and treating it again?

Move the fish to the spare tank.
Add epson salts to help draw the fluids out.
Double dose the anti internal bacteria med. You can double dose in severe cases.
Feed peas. That's all. No other foods.
