While at my LFS, where I had previously bought "mollies"...they had changed the name on the tank to "Molly/Platy"

I asked about it and they said that the shipments they get are mixed ...

how can I identify what fish I have????

I am attaching pictures of some of them - I have been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to get decent pictures lol!

ALSO - IS PHOTO 1 PREGNANT? (SHE IS ALSO THE FISH ON THE LEFT IN PHOTO 4)

Hmmm not sure if they're hybrids?
But i don't think mollies and platies cross breed??

They look like platys but have characteristics of mollies??

Sorry not much help i know

looks like you have platies. They cannot crossbreed with mollies

mollys are generally bigger than platies other than that I think they are pretty similar but they have much different genes which is why they cant breed together

I see nothing but platies in those pictures EyesofGreen. Only picture 3 could possibly be a molly but the picture is too poor to really see the fish's shape properly. It has the general look of a platy but has a slight possibility of being a molly, until we get a better picture.

photo 3 is of a molly the rest are platies.

Platies have a compressed body shape compared to mollies

haha Figures! Picture 3 is my only male!!!

there is a female nearly IDENTICAL to the male in picture 3 - can I assume she is a molly? finshape, length, shape - all are the same at the guy in picture 3?

The biggest give away on telling them apart is the angle of the mouth to the head and body. The more upturned mouth is a molly. I had to go back and stare at the pictures for a while to decide why I just knew the rest were not mollies. After a while you just glance at a fish and sort them mentally without any conscious thought. That is why I had to go back and stare at the pictures.

Hi I'm just wondering if anyone can help me identify my pair of fish.I'm pretty sure one is a molly and the other is a platy but not sure which is which. Also I've had a look around the Internet but I haven't seen any silvery white ones like mine. Is the color uncommon for these fish?

Silver Molly, black and orange Platy.

Both the silver one and the orange and black one are females. You will find that you can quickly tell them apart after a while. We do have a post for sexing livebearers at the top of the forum section. It is located here.
