One of my female platies had a split fin this morning, right down to the base. Could this be fin nipping? I've just added some silvertips.
Water stats are fine (amm 0 ni 0 na 15) and she looks fine and eats like a pig, but i've noticed that the base of her fins (not her body) look kinda reddish. I'm not sure if it's her normal colour as it changes with the light, so i'm asking wether or not to panic. I'll post pictures asap. Thanks!

Stocking: 4 platies 4 silvertips 2 CAE's in a 64 litre. Please don't harass me about the CAEs, they're doing fine and will be rehomed when they outgrow the tank

you sure its not the CAE's doing it now i would rehome them now rather than later

How would the CAEs cause a red fin base? Apparently they suck the slime coat of big-bodied fish, so surely they would aim for the body? They definitely can't nip fins, they have suckermouths

Pics of the fish. Both have the reddish band across their tail, but only the orange one has a split fin

They seem okay from the pictures, but I don't know what they were like before, so can't really judge.

How long have you had these particular fish? And what lighting is on your tank?

James.

Just plain orange before, but i think the tail base might've been darker. I've had my platies for 3 years, my tetras for a month (but only a week in this tank) and the CAEs for about 6 months
Tank had a 50watt day bulb and a blue night bulb. Pretty stanard. I think it might've been the lighting because they tend to go really pale at night and quite dark when i turn the lights off.

Any ideas on the fin tear? It's healing up ok

If it is septicimia I was told to try:
Maracyn one and two or Maracyn plus

My angel had something like that and still kinda does. She gets red mostly at the base and top of tailfin but used to get REALLY red at base of everything. I decided not to treat cuz I wasn't sure and it definately seems like it got better. She still eats like crazy and acts perfectly normal
