Looks like a type of macro algae to my untrained eye :) Good for the tank indeed. Not really sure on the type as ive only just joined the marine side of things myself.

EDIT: It appears to be a caulerpa species macro algae. Desirable :)

Only just mentioning it because it seems to have grown and has new shoots coming out. don't want it on this piece of coral is it possible to move? if it has to stay i'll have to live with it

cheers

Not sure exactly what macro it is, kust make sure you keep an eye on it, some algae can take hold quick and are hard to get rid of.

yea those are Halimeda macro algae. they are pretty much as good as any other macro algae (if you have any). the special thing about this kind of macro algae is that they grow by using the calcium carbonate in your tank, so if your tank is heavily stocked with corals that require a lot of calcium, i would recommend taking it out. otherwise it's not a bad idea to keep these around. mine have never grown more than an inch but for some people they grow like weeds and they have to manually harvest them to keep the population under control.

halimeda for sure and it will just continue to grow if dont pull it out, had some in my tank about 12-18 months back, it doesnt really casue a problem unless you have some hard corals, even then I found it didnt have an effect on any of the prams in my tank but i did keep on top of it and ended up getting shot of the LR it had attached itself to as i was struggling woith bubble culerpa as well on the same bit

I have a whole bunch of this growing behind the rockwork in my main tank. Mine grew fronm pretty much nothign and is no about a foot long and half a foot in diameter. You can probably just cut it off and attached it to another piece of rock with an elastic band. When I have bits that get detached from the main plant they have reattached elsewhere in the tank.
