When I was feeding today, I noticed about 15 or 20 Skiffia lermae fry in my tank. They were about the size of two weeks old guppies to my eye.My guess is that they were newly born or at least very recently born. I have plenty of java moss in their tank so they are not in any real danger from the adults and the adults seem to be ignoring them. There are 5 adults of mixed sexes in the tank and of course now the fry. This is my first time with these guys. Does anyone have any observations about the Skiffia that I might find useful?

Skiffia lermae are concidered a difficult fish to keep

Many years ago I kept a population of them for 6 years with no problem into one day I had a complete wipe out they all died over night i could not fined any thing wrong with the fish or water I later found out that other fish keepers had similar problems.

I kept them between 68f-72f a 40% weekly water change fed them well on flake and live foods they breed regularly the fry Were ok left in with the adults .

Have you seen the males colour up at breeding time they are so Beautiful

Good luck with them

I have had a similar problem to Fish48.

Lovely fish though. I am currently concentrating on Skiffia francesae.

Congratulations with them.

My C. lateralis are a recent addition to my tanks. They are the Guadalupe aguilera collection like yours. The skiffia I have are the easier Skiffia lermae. At least I was led to believe they are easier than the S. francesae that were offered as the species maintenance fish at last year's ALA convention. I did pick up this year's SMP offering of A towerii. So far they are thriving in my tank and I am looking forward to their first fry drop in my tank.

Another drop yesterday on my Skiffia lermae. Meanwhile, my A towerii also dropped a few fry last week but obviously they are more carnivorous than many other goodeids. I do have a few survivors in their tank but only a very few. The remaining fry do seem to be unthreatened by the adults, so it seems they are only vulnerable to predation for a short time. I have also found about 20 new fry in the Xenotoca eiseni tank who are doing well and my Xenoophorus captivus adults have been moved to a summer residence of 150 gallons outdoors. The fry from their tank are still in the tank keeping the filter cycled. We will sees how the captivus do in an outdoor tub this summer. Every year I try something different out there and often get back much better and far more fish than I put out.

The reason I said that, I have only 3 fry remaining. All of my other goodeids would have left me more than that with no cover provided. Maybe I am just too picky.

Goodeids can be Unpredictable at times you cannot always tell what they are going to do or behave. an Example Zoogoneticus tequila are usually peaceful with there fry but occasionally they will kill them it seems to be for no apparent reason.

There are many species of goodeid that will attack kill or even eat there own fry. And then there are the males of some species that will occasionally fight and kill the females.

not all goodeids are easy to keep and breed as many people may believe.

I went back 2 days ago and found about 15 fry in the A towerii tank so maybe the first ones I saw were just the beginning of a drop. The female A towerii just never seem to be as heavy as what I see with most other goodeids. They are a very slim fish, much like a zebra danio in terms of being long and slender.
