Common name/s: Teacup ray

Scientific name: potamotrygon laticeps

Family: Potamotrygonidae

Origin: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay.

Maximum size:around 10-12" in captivity but larger in the wild.

Care: As with all rays, this is a sensative fish that needs a mature tank of at least 6 months. although they can be kept in tanks with a gravel base, sand is a much better opiton as they can burrow easly. dim lighting is prefered but not critical. As for water quality, they require a pH or 6.5-7, with soft water. I'v always found them to do well in the same water conditions to discus with maybe the temp a little lower. they need a medium to large tank of around 4x2x2 but longterm 4x3x2deep would be better.

Feeding: when young, they do very well on bloodworm, live and frozen but as they grow, they may accept chopped mussel, lancefish and earth worms.

Sexing: males have "claspers" where the tail meets the body

Breeding: these have been bred but mostly by accident.

BTW: Just noticed the time, I'v found some info on breeding and other little bits and will add them later today

The common name of Tea cup stingray is a generic name given to any unidentified ray of "tea cup" sized diameter.

Potamotrygon laticeps is an old no longer used synom of the fish now known as Potamotrygon motoro.

Most teacup rays are in fact Potamotrygon orbygini ( formerly Potamotrygon reticulatus )
