courgette, potato, butternut squash, lettuce, grapes, apple, have tried things like prawns, muscles, bloodworm, tubifex etc etc but the higher protein foods should really only be given as a treat every so often.

Nice bristles!

I recently got a BN (2") and have been feeding him pellets, wafer, cucumber and shelled peas. Caught him getting in on the bloodworm action the other day too. I assume it's a him because I can see about 6 bristles around the front of his head, females don't have them right?

I'll have to give potato and apple a try, always ample supply of those around the house :)

In theory I could try quite a few things right? would green beans, carrots, parsnip, sweetcorn etc be alright?

In theory yes you could try pretty much anything, if your trying things like sweetcorn and any other shelled foods just make sure the shells are removed, ive known plecs and fish choke and die because they haven't been removed.

From expeience common BN females tend to not develope bristles at all, however if they do they will be around the top lip only. Males will develope them up the nose area and usually are branched liked when older.

Mine has about 6 bristles around the top lip only, none on the nose as it were. Could this still be a male in a very juvi stage? Shame I haven't got a pic to post...are there any other distinguishing features?

Just put 2 bits of green bean in at each end of the tank, giving that a try.

At 2 inch and with that many bristles i would say a developing male, tbh ive kept alot of female common BN's and none of them had bristles. over time you will probably find him starting to develop up the nose, at 2 inch he is still considered a baby so time will tell :).

I feed them much more zucchini than any other vegetable but have given them butternut squash, cucumber, lettuce, and kale too. They also try to get the flakes and Hikari Sinking Wafers that I feed my corys.

I want an especially ugly male to contrast my cichlids :)

LOL, im sure you will get your wish, they aren't the prettiest of plecs but do have that likeability about them ;)

Boiled carrots are also an option -my baby BN eat them as well as my mollies and snails!
