Think I Found My Betta

Hello everyone, so I went into this fish store the other day, looking for replacement test tubes for my kit (broke a couple)and this is the only store in the area that sells them. Anyway I looked at the bettas and I think I finally found my Betta. I forgot my cell phone at home so this was the cloest I could find from pics on the net.



What type is he? I am totally new to Bettas and have no idea. My tank is still cycling so not quite ready for him yet, the store said they will try to hold him for me (they wern't sure eithor on the type - the Betta expert was off that day) but they couldn't promise ... hopefully my tank will be ready soon so I don't miss out on him.

A couple of questions:

1. They keep them in really small glass bowls (almost look like very small candy dishes less then 1 gallon) and that is how they send them home in the small glass bowl. I am a little nervous about transporting him home in a glass jar (open top). The store is about 30 minutes from my house, what would be the best way to transport him? Should I bring a bag (zip top, or if I can get my hands on an actually fish bag) and transfer him to that before I leave the store? Like I said it is very little water, way less then a gallon, probably only about 1/4 gallon if that, so I am worried that if I transfer him to a bag the water level will drop and there won't be enough for him. I suppose I could use a small sandwich bag that would probably be small enough to keep the water level equal.

2. They had 2 types of this betta there but one had pop-eye disease. I felt bad for the guy and was origionally thinking of getting the sick one just to rescue him. But like I said I am new to bettas, and well fish keeping in general so I am nervous to bring a sick fish home. How easy is it to treat pop-eye and what exactly do I need to treat it. He will be going into a 5 gallon tank when I get him home. Plus my tank really isn't ready ... so I would have to house him in a "traditional fish-bowl" untill the tank was cycled, which I am sure would not be the best thing for a healthy betta let alone a sick one.

that is a crown tail. and a handsome one at that.
pop eye isnt a disease in its own right, but is casued by underlying condition (from bacterial to injury to bad water). glad you didnt set yourself up for a possible failure, even though you want to help the fish.
as for the betta you will get, please dont keep him in a small bowl until cycled. put him in the 5 gal and do fish-in cycle. you will have to change lots of water either way and at least in a 5 gal, his waste will be more dilute in a larger volume of water.

That is exactly what I was thinking. My 5 Gallon is hopefully nearing the end of a fishless cycle so I didn't get eithor because I knew I really didn't have anywhere approiately to house them. I am just hoping he is still there when the cycle is finished

please fish in cycle. test your water frequently and do appropriate water changes. a larger volume of water will dilute the ammonia..if into a fish in cycle. do a LARge WATER change and then put your betta in the bigger tank. cut back on feeding (to every other day)and do everyother day 50% waterchanges until it cycles.

Why do a fish in cycle? I am already in the middle of a fish-less cycle and as I did NOT actually buy the betta yet it would seem silly to stop the fishless cycle as I would have to do a very large water change (ammonia is being maintained at 2-4ppm for fishless cycle), then go buy the fish and start with a fish in cycle. It just seems easier to finish my fishless cycle then go buy the Betta. Am I crazy in thinking this?

Maybe I wasn't quite clear in the first post ... I saw the fish at the pet store, they are going to try to hold it for me untill my fishless cycle is done, but if someone comes in wanting to buy him then they will sell and not hold for me. So I don't actually have the Betta fish yet.

Fish in cycling is not good and I don't recommend it. I think what Loraxchick means is she wants the betta out of that tiny container at the store and into his new home asap because the conditions at the shop are not good.

From the pic definitly a crowntail, the one in the pic looks like it might be a double tail, but I'm not sure on that.

Fish bag would be the best, but then if not you can use a sandwich bag, make sure its water tight, fill 1/3 with water and the 2/3 with oxygen. Bae has a thread about how to bag fish, check it out I would not reccommend using the Glass Jar Open Top, he is more than likely to jump out.

Myaxzin, most probarly, and clean water,
Re: the temporary bowl, just make sure you do regular water changes of 50% atleast with dechlorinated water, and he should be fine

Hope that helps! What are your water stats atm? and what ource of ammonia have you been using for your Fish-less cycle?

If it's a fish shop that sells other types of fish in plastic bags, just ask them to bag it up properly for you-noobs! Fancy sending you home with a fish in an open topped bowl!
I think what people are saying about the cycling is in response to your suggestion of getting it before your fishless is finished and keeping it in a bowl temporarily. If you do this, it would be better to finish off the cycle as a fish in rather than keep him in the bowl.

^^ thats what i thought they were doing..had it already and continued to fishless cycle keeping the fish in the bowl in the meantime*shrugs*
i lost the fact that the fish was still in the shop..i thought you already had it and it was in a bowl at your house while you continued fishless cycling..'
where is your cycle at the moment? processing any ammonia? nitrates yet? i, personally would just finish fish in cycle if i really wanted that particular fish. being in a tiny bowl may be cause for concern unless the shop does an extraordinary job of water changing every day, which realistically doesnt happen. just saying, may casue helth probs. and the sooner you get him into a lrger volume of water the better.
sorry that i missed that point. but i still think if you want THAT fish, you should let the ammonia process fully to nitrate and just get the fish asap(depending on where your fishless cycle is anyway).
just my thoughts on the matter.

Thanks that does help ... water stats at the moment are ammonia 2ppm nitrites 0.25 and nitrates 0.5 (ph 7.8). I had a heck of a time gettting activity but it looks like I am starting to head down the right path so hopefully it should be done soon.

Ok well that makes sense. Basically the store said that if someone comes in wanting to buy him they will call me first and see if I want to come pick him up, if I am not ready for him then they will sell him. So they are kinda holding him for me, but I really am not quite ready for him, or any betta for that matter. First, my tank is not cycled, and second I am having problems with my heater, essentially, it heats the water to 85 F when set to the lowest setting. I have a replacement heater coming from hydor, but although I suppose I could convert to a fish in cycle, I really can't because I simply can't provide him with the water temp he would require saftely. Anyway, my friend was with me at the store and I have a feeling she is going to go and get him ... she fell for him too

Oh no problem I thought of doing that, but I am also having problems with my heater, so I am really leary about putting any fish in there until my replacement comes in from Hydor. Anyway my friend just called and asked if I would be terribly upset if she went to get him, she fell in love with him too. So I told her she could, as I really am not ready for him yet. I would rather see him in a tank, any tank even if it isn't mine. But I think this fish store actually does a pretty good job with the bettas .... the water all looked really really clean, and I only saw one unhealthy fish (the one with the pop-eye), which is a heck of a lot better then I can say for most of the shops in the area selling Bettas. Most stores I go into, half of the bettas were dead, or almost dead. Which is a shame, I don't know why they bother carring them if they are just going to let them die . So I think I will definately get my Betta from that store simply because the bettas did look healthier then at most stores. They were actually pretty active too, which I have never seen at other stores. But I think he is definately the type I want when I am ready. Thanks again.
