i have a lead!
Type "id this white channa" into google, 1st link should be an aro fanatics link, go onto it. Someone asks to id his white channa, i cant see his pics as my phone wont show them. But further down in the thread someone says they are sp. platinum and a pic, it looks almost identical to my white channa with the dark patch's, he says they develop the darj patch's when they have a dark substrate but most of the body will stay white. The head shape is identical and just altogether looks the same. If this is the case it says they get to about 20cm and i think the £100 for the 3 i payed was a very good deal! Anyway check it out and tell me what you think!
Cheers
David

:hyper: Channa sp. "new prince"/Platinum ....look's just like it doe'snt it :good:

"These fish were thought to be color variants of Channa punctata but with the collection of many specimens and all from the same generalised area doubts started to creep into my mind.

I sent off a few pcs to Pascal Antler in Germany and have just last week also sent some specimens to Dr. Ralf Britz who incidentally desribed C. pulchra & C. ornatipinis.

We will in due time know if these are a separate species or not.

Another point to be noted is that these fish unlike C. punctata who these coexist with never grow more than 20 cm, atleast that's the largest I've seen : 17 cm max so I'm allowing for another 3 cm increase for good measure.

If you had read the pdf on the Slaty Blue Nandus (Nandus andrewi) which Heok Hee had described along with Zeehan Jafaar, these Channa come from exactly the same zone. They have NEVER been collected from outside that area.

I have however sourced Albino and Leucistic and even Harlequin punctata types from elsewhere but NEVER this color form.

I'll keep you updated on scientific inroads for this fish as and when.

Why do you not start a thread on this fish in Waterwolves and you might get fellow aquarists who had purchased this fish either in Germany, U.K. or Japan to chip in with their inputs. Over 50 pcs have been sold in the past six months.

Do keep in touch and Happy Fishkeeping !

Best,

Andrew

very good match wouldn't you say? 20cm may, sounds good to me! I got a very cheap deal if this is the case! Im sure someone else will see the pics and hopefully confirm my suspicions!
Does anybody know how much the platinums are worth, not that they will be going anywhere soon but its just interesting to know these things! Hehe
David

i am told channa punctata and sp. platinum are found in the same area co-habiting with each other. At first they was thought to be a variation of punctata but because so many numbers have been found in the area it is thought to be a seperate sp. and this is why platinums remain an unidentified sp.
They have exactly the same characteristics ar the pictured sp. platinum in that arofanatics thread.
I will email andy at bas later to ask the location, but as i understand punctata and platinum are found in the same place it wouldnt help much.

well they are all in seperate tanks now after the smallest one got a good beating last night! I dont have the space for 3 seperate tanks for these so looks like i may have to sell on one or two.
If anyone may be intrested let me know!
