What you guys think, is platy about to pop or no. I read the tread regarding how to know and it helped me with my other Platy, but i cant figure out this one.

i think she has awhile.. the black area in her tummy is they key.. i've been told in most live bearers.. the black area (forget the proper term) grows larger as the pregnancy progresses.. look for that and then do what you need to do to prepare for fry.. she's a beautiful fish

my other platy never developed the black area and she poped about 5 days ago, and this one been pregnant for a few weeks now. A couple of days ago i even put her in breeding net thinking shes about to pop, but nothing happened.

I wouldnt put her in a breeding net unless you are certain she is goin to drop. signs are that she hides away in a corner or a hiding place, her black gravid spot is very dark and near the dorsal fin, and you may see the frys heads through her gravid spot. good luck x

beutiful fish x

Thanks for fast reply.
She has been hiding for a week now, thats one of the reasons i was concerned.
My previous Platy never developed a gravid spot nor any fry was visible, I noticed a white spot (birth canal) on previous one and put her in the breeding net and 4 hours later she dropped. I can see the birth canal (white ball like by anal fin) on this one for a week now.

hmm, wierd. well it has been about a year at least since i have had a pregnancey. am going to get 2 platies hopefully on thursday and want some babies. will be nice to get some little fish once in a while. id keep an eye on her, however let her feel comfortable. dnt be fishing her in and out the birth tank every hour or so. if you see little fry swimming round, or you do see her in a u shape (pushing) then move her into the birth net. double check before moving her. be sure x

love to see how she gets on. love too see some pics of some baby fry x

Well, maybe she is just stressed. I'd say just leave her be and you will catch her squared off soon. Just be patient!

she still lookkks like she will be a will but i just read whats in your tank and you have 3m 2f u should have at least 2 females to every male
so you need to get 4 more females or get read of some males or they will harass them and could end up killing them

Well that's true. Interesting thing is Coral red Platy's don't bother each other, the only bully i have is 1 male Sunset Platy and he only bothers the other male Sunset only. I'm just hoping to wait and see what my fry gonna end up (male to female ratio). Within a month or two i should have about 30+ more platy in tank.
I already have 14 fry and when the second one drops i will have another 15 or more. After that im not gonna worry preserving than and let them drop in tank.
I did purchase a lots of plants and it seems to help them all calm down a bit, given they have more hiding spots now.

PS: I noticed her grvid spot got a lot darker, and shes starting to square off, so I think she will drop soon.

Thanks for the kind words. I'll post some pictures of fry when she drops.

My tank is 29 Gal (110 liter).

Well she finally drop last night, and good thing i had her in breeding trap. i was expecting her to drop prolly 10 ~30 judging from how big she became, but she dropped ONLY 4. I think she will drop more, but there is no day without problems. My 1 and half year old girl managed to get hold of a full can of fish food and empty it all in my tank. I spent last 3 hours siphoning water and doing water changes. obviously there was a lot of stress for fish and newborns and the water is still very cloudy.

Will see if any survive.

I have seen that before Nexorcist. I also had children at home once and they all love to help with the fish. As long as you get most of the food out and stay on top of water changes for a while, things should recover OK.

Well i think i got about 90% of food out of there, the rest probable got deep in gravel. The water is still very cloudy even after 4 hours. i did about 15% water change, then siphon about 40% and ran it throgh cheesecloth to remove most leftovers and refill the tank with same water. Also i change the filter in one of my HOB.
I'll continue to do 10% water changes daily till it clears.
Thanks for advice.
