HI,

I’ve just purchased a 72" 54 LED mood light for my tank and am considering using it as a permeate light instead of fluorescent one (x2 30watt tubes). I only have a small amount of plant life in the tanks.

I was wondering if I could get some advice/thoughts on the idea as I not sure as to what in mite do to the fish.

I can provide a PIC is someone can tell me a good Picture hosting site I can put it on

Looking forward to you answers

Tony

I know the LED light will not effect the fish at all other than that it might make them look different, color wise.

As for the plant life, I dont know if an LED is a good light source for live plants(I dont know what K rating and what not they are?)? I could be wrong, someone would have to give you advice on LEDs and plants though.

But the fish will be just fine.

Hi bonez :)

I'm going to bump your thread up and move it to the Hardware and DIY section. Perhaps you will get more responses there. :D

>PUTS ON TIN HAT< I dont believe there is a viable method of replacing traditional lamps with LEDs..... YET ! (for plant growth)

Hi,

Thankyou for the replies do far. I'm not to worried about plant life as the cichlids rip them apart so I’m always buying new ones.

Just wanted to find out if it would harm the Fish?

Its al part of my plan to make the house run as efficiency as I can. The LED light uses 75% less power then the normal 6 foot light.

Now all I need is a cheap way to heat the Tank were coming into autumn/winter here so I can no longer leave it off. Summer ok because the temp can reach low 40c outside

You see I want a bigger tank buy the wife said I Eva have to sell my other tanks or reduce our living expenses

Below is my current project tank

I think you would need to get the specification on the LED's, if you look at the light spectrum on a good lamp box it shows the different light frequencies that the lamp will create - I don't think that LED's can recreate all of those frequencies as yet but check the spec not just the K rating as you need a good spread of colours for the fish and plants.
