Hey, I was wondering if anyone out there could help me identify this particular color strain of platy I have... She's a much darker blue than any platy that I've ever seen as being "blue" or "blue neon" or "blue moon," etc. Is she just a mutt?

The photo isn't great, but the scales that appear black in the picture are actually mottled blue and black, but they just look really dark here...

Is she a tuxedo platy maybe? I've had a tuxedo one before and it looked pretty close to what yours looks like... I could be wrong though.

She could be an atypical tuxedo, I guess. Though the black extends up onto her face, which is not tuxedo standard.

I wish I could find more platies like her... she was the only one of her color in the tank...

Ya, maybe you can try and breed her if you'd like too, it's totally up to you though, her babies would probably have beautiful colors. Eh?

She was already pregnant when I bought her, and she's already had 6 batches of fry for me! Two batches died due to ick treatment, but I managed to save 16 fry from the other 4.

The fry colors so far are... neon blue w/ orange dorsal fin, lots of white or pale (not fully colored yet) with black speckles/freckles, two orange plumetails with black freckles, and a mostly black with yellowish orange face, belly and fins... The other 7 fry that are in the breeder net are too small to tell yet...

She was in an assorted platy tank, so I'm pretty sure she's a mutt... and judging by her crazy-colored offspring, she's probably not a pure/true breeding color strain. But, I just thought I'd ask since she's kind of unique...

Oh wow, that many fry batches already? Lol, My molly is pregnant right now (in my post a couple down) but I think she's gonna have her babies, read it and let me know what you think. K? (if you want to, lol)

I have a tank that is full of Platy's similar to the one that you have in your picture. They came from member Fourthtimelucky.

I have looked elsewhere and not seen anything comparable in the many shops I have visited, other than some described as swordtails. Now I know that Platys and swordtails are closely related and can even interbreed but these were described as platys to me and there are none in the tank with great sword characteristics.

My son and I really like this blue colour and plan to quarantine the bluest four females until they are "clean" of any fry, then introduce the bluest male or maybe 2 to try and see if we get any fry with enhanced colour.

I would be very interested in where you got yours from and also if you would be interested in exchanging (selling) some of the off spring.

Sounds like she has not mated with one of her own, though I have platties ranging from silver / white with a slight tinge of blue as they turn to those with hint of blue then white then reddish tails.

On the tuxedo front I have a tuxedo male plattie (Black/yellow with red on fin) who has a black upper lip (more pronouced than others).

As I do not know the whole story behind the origins of the fish I have and what is in the tank it is difficult to know exactly how they all came about, are they varieties from the same parents or were there other types of similar (coral for example) platties in the tank and are some cross breeds.

Where abouts are you based?

Believe it or not, I snagged her from an Assorted Platy tank in Wal-Mart! I hate buying fish from there because the employees don't know squat about fish, but she was so beautiful that I couldn't resist! I'm glad to know there are more platies out there with such a pretty coloration.

Oh, and I'm from Northern Colorado.

I am afraid not just that they were platys and that these were descendents of the originals which are no longer there.

You can probably pick out in the picture the ones like yours, some of the more silver/white ones and those with the red tail.

If I come across the name I will add it into this thread

OK I saw a tank at the weekend in a fish shop a long way from where I live, I was picking up a couple of new tanks. This shop had a vareity of tanks some of which were very similar to ours, the others had some red in the tails which fits with some of the varities I am seeing. They were descirbed as Balck Platys

I've seen some of those platies. I also saw some blue hawaiin platies. They were beautiful.

Obivously had tanks on the brain when I posted this:

This shop had a vareity of tanks

should have read:

This shop had a variety of fish

I love all the shops with lots of tanks. It gives you a lot of good choices.
