Just thought i would share a photo of my Geo's and their babies!

Had to move them from a community tank due to fighting and within a week they had had fry!

thats so cool lovley fish how the fry grow up

Thanks Badenmate!

The fry were a complete suprise, nearly sucked them up in the gravel cleaner as i though it was waste products.

They are 2/3 times the original size in around a week, the parents collect fry that have wondered off in their mouths and spit them out where they want them!

looking real good, congrats

Cheers!!!

Has anyone had luck breeding these as well?

From what i have read they can breed around twice a month, is it wise to leave the 1st lot of fry in at this juncture, or should they be removed to let the new batch thrive?

hi i have 2 geophagus brasiliensis, very similar to your geos but with metallic blue specs. Just wondering if you know how to sex them? Yours look the same with 1 with slightly darker/brighter colouring than the other, im taking it this is the male 1? Mine are similar 1 being brighter coloured than the other but 1 is forever chasing the other, so im thinking both are males, the brighter 1 being the most dominant. I could get a couple more in hope 2 pair off, but would help greatly if i could get a definate difference in the sexes.

Hi Dave, yes they do look very similar, mine do have some hints of blue you cant see in the photo but no where as much as yours, plus the guy i got them from is a very reputable cichlid dealer so im comfortable they are iporangensis.

The differences are very noticable in mine, one is distinctly bigger than the other. Have yours started to dig pits in the gravel? As in clearing hollows? If so this is typical breeding behavior, they place the fry there when they hatch!

Also the female has a different shaped underbelly with a protusion, this is where she lays the eggs from, I'm not 100% sure if differences in the colours in Cichlids makes a difference as it does in Betta's. I have a breeding pair of Hereos Severums and the difference in them is hardly noticable apart from a small size difference.

There are a few websites that have photos of males and females but as i said its hard to tell so waiting it out and seeing what happens may be your best bet!

This is the female you can see the protusion on the bottom

Good luck
