He is called hugo, he was 4 on the 5th jan, so only just 4.
He weighs about 6 stone, im 6ft 2 and when he stands his nose touch's my chin, he thinks he is a cat! He tries to follow the cats out of the conservatory window, gonna get a dog flap a think! He is like a big child, jumping around, gets overly excited everytime someone walks through the door. When i take him for walks. . .well, when he takes me for walks! I let him go and he runs round like a mental case, and wil not stop until HE feels he has had enough! When all is said and done and his mentality set aside he is soft and scared of his own shadow! And yep he is docked and was so when a bought him at just under 10 weeks old. Its funny because when he gets excited he wags the tail he hasnt got and ends up shakin his bottom and then his whole body to the point he cant control it!
Lovely dog tho! My little friend!

Love your dog! He seems very sweet and sounds like a lot of fun.

Slightly off topic, I'm from the US and heard it was illegal to dock tails in the UK....is this true? Or is it true for just some breeds? Or is it a complete rumor? I know its a widespread practice here in the US for lots of breeds (dobies, aussies, many terrier breeds, etc.)

well yes and no really. i know in he us its legal to have there ears done aswel isnt it? thats illegal here and from what i know always has been. well up until a couple of years ago it was legal for someone to doc the dogs tail ( some one meening anyone)
but im pretty sure its still legal for a vetenary surgeon to do it. i do see an increasingly large amount of dobermans, rottweilers and things like that with tails now so im unsure really!

Ahh okay. Yeah it's legal to do the ears too, although, I always think they look cuter without the ears done. That makes sense that a vet can do it, I really don't think just anyone should be able to. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

It's illegal in the uk to dock tails or crop ears = there are some exceptions eg dogs that work and it would cause them harm to have a tail. Saying that your boy is four so he was probably docked before the law changed, I can't remember when it changed

He certainly sounds like a typical dobe, bless him - what a delight a dobe is, loyal, loving, playful and kind and just irrisistable and oh so handsome :good:

PS just went and had a look round the net - interestingly it would seem to be easy to get a docked puppy in the uk, even though it is now illegal

im sure the docking law was introduced a while back, my spaniel has her tail docked though mainly cus she came from a litter of spaniels that were going to farms etc. but im pretty sure shes 7 now that it changed to be illegal not long after she was born.

its a confusing matter though!

ps love the doberman such awesome dogs !

i think docking is still allow, but you can't present the dog in shows. i seem to remember them saying it in cruft and lots of breeders threaten to quit because of it. unless they changed it recently

Tail Docking in the UK Officially Over
General Dog News April 13th, 2007
A statement from the council of docked breeds below:

On Friday, April 6th, the Animal Welfare Act became law in England (March 28th in Wales) and with it, a ban on tail docking for all but working dogs became effective. Later this month, the Animal Health & Welfare (Scotland) Act comes into effect, with a total ban on the docking of dogs’ tails, with no exemptions.

The Council of Docked Breeds has fought against any such bans on tail docking since the Animal Welfare Bill was first mooted by the Government in 2002 and such a ban was first raised. Since 2004, the CDB worked very closely with the Kennel Club in a concerted effort to retain the freedom of choice. We were both pleasantly surprised when the Animal Welfare Bill was published 14 October 2005 to read in the Regulatory Impact Assessment which accompanies the Bill, that the Government stated: “Sincere views were held by those who both support and oppose a ban on cosmetic docking and our preference is that there should continue to be freedom of choice.”

Sadly, this view was not shared by the majority of MP’s. The third reading of the Animal Welfare Bill took place on Tuesday 14 March 2006, and 88% of MPs voted in favour of a ban on tail docking with an exemption for certain working dogs, with many restrictions.

The Animal Welfare Acts came into force in Wales on 31 March 2007, England on 6 April 2007 and Scotland from 30 April 2007. Tail docking will be effectively banned from the above dates. An exemption for certain working dogs only applies to those being docked in England or Wales.
