I just saw a couple of these in my lfs, beautiful fish but they were only 3 inches max and priced at 25 quid! - is this normal?

Are they easy to look after?

yes thats a pretty standard LFS price, uncommon species like can cost anywhere between £20-£40 for a 2-3 inch juvi.

Provided you give them the correct diet for their needs and keep the water parameters in top condition they are easy to keep, the same as with any species really.

They are expensive...$32 here...I'm not sure how that translates to quid. They have a bad reputation for settling, and many have trouble keeping them alive. Once they HAVE settled, they do well. I've read that they are starved during transport, and the gut bacteria dies. Then, even if the fish eats, it can't get nutrition, and will starve.

presuming thats USD then it equates to just under £22 so quite a good price compared to British prices.

i'll be sure to give it a thorough once over if i decide to buy it, i would put it with my nezzies if i got it, they require temps of no higher than 73F - is this to cold for GN's

GNs prefer it slightly warmer really, PlanetCatfish give an ideal temperature of between 77-86

btw, what are nezzies ?

Nezzies - Xiphophorus Nezahualcoyotl, a rare swordtail from the mountain streams of Mexico :

Are the GN' known to be easily breedable in aquariums?

ah, very nice

Not Sure how easy it is, but yes they can be bred in captivity if kept in tanks with strong currents, high temperatures (82-86) and very good water quality.

There are a few pleco breeders on here so hopefully one will see your post and be able to give you a better answer

i had mine but it only lasted just over a month mine was about 12cm and was £34 . it was nice but had issues with it eating .... think i'm going to go with standard pleco like bristlenose or something .

I've had bad luck with them as well..I've tried three times...

as a general rule check out the belly, if it's sunken then walk away or ask the lfs to hold it for a couple of weeks until it's fattened up and it's belly looks 'normal'.

i tried one about a month ago it lasted less then two weeks, all my states were spot on!

there are two types of golden nuggets, one gets to about 6 inches i believe and the other can easily double that so i have heard. that said when they do settle into your tank they are great plecs, i had one for about 6 months but died due to a tank problem. They can be very territorial though - my syno eupt and my gn had the tank divided almost down the middle for territories.
