Hello,

I have had these marks on my Java fern leave for about two weeks I just completed a water change and pruned the leave off for a better look but i still do not know what they are.

I was guessing something to do with snails but I only have MTS so they give birth to live young I belive.

I tried to remove one but it seemed to squash and was quite crunchy any Ideas?

There is only Neons with 5 Rummy nose Tetras in the tank all stats are good with regular change every 10 days plants are Java fern ,Java moss and Amazon Sword as I kill everything else.

There are also 6 or more cherry shrimps in thereI know its nothing to do with them .

Help appreciated

Thanks.

Hello,

I also attached a pic of the tank to see if it helps.

Thanks

The dark, slightly protruding spots? I think those are called sori (plural for sorus) which in turn are clusters of sporangia (sporangium). All aquatic and terrestrial ferns can produce those, they're where the spores develop. In theory they could release spores that could sprout new java ferns elsewhere in the tank, although I reckon they're more likely to end up in the filter.

But I have no idea what triggers their production, java ferns in some tanks never seem to produce them.

If they bother you, you can get a narrow variety of java fern that doesn't seem to produce them much
