The bottom pic looks like a gibbiceps and if so then they can get to 30+cm within a couple of years.

Not sure about sexing them but in many suckermouth catfish the males get hairs on their pectoral (side) fins and around the face/ top of mouth area. But they don't show them until they mature. Gibbiceps take about 5 yrs to mature.

cheers thats what i thought. so i rekon i will have to rehome him then. at the mo he is about 3 inches and is in a 120 litre tank hes is destined for a 300 litre would that still be too small?

it depends on how wide the 300litre tank is. The fish has to be able to turn around without touching the sides. If the fish grows to 30cm and the tank is only 30cm wide then the tank is too small. If the tank is 18inches-2ft wide then it should be fine.

should be ok then as tank will be 121cm long 51 cm wide and 62 cm high. which is good as i would like to keep him

cheers cant wait til he gets bigger. he is a greedy sod loves algae wafers and bloodworm

You should have some driftwood in the tank for the catfish. They will also eat fruit & vegetables like pumpkin, zucchini, peas, beans, etc. Don't feed onion or potatoe but most other things are fine.
You can feed them raw or cooked. Try both and see which the fish prefers.

hes got a nice big bit of driftwood in there i also give him cucumber
