I just noticed an odd sore area on one of my new panda corydoras. The area is kind of red and is located near, but not on the gills of the cory. Can anyone tell me what this sore red area is? Also, what is causing it and what can I do to treat it? The red spot is only present on this one catfish in my tank so I am a little bit worried :(.

I'll attatch a picture since I am not describing it very well...

Can you post your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Maracyn plus, or maracyn one and two.

it looks like a bacterial infection has gotten into a wound. Are there any sharp objects in the tank that the fish might have injured itself on?
A general broad-spectrum medication should clea rit up.

I dont notice any sharp objects in my tank...I have two pieces of driftwood and some plants, so Im not sure about sharp objects. Ill try treating it with some medication to see if the red area goes away.

Be careful when treating corydoras and other catfish & loaches as they are scaleless and will not tolerate a full dose of most medications. Check the directions on the packaging.

To work out the volume of water in the tank
measure Length x Width x Height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres

When measuring the height, measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank, remove them before measuring the height.

Before you treat the tank do a 50% water change and complete gravel clean. This will reduce the gunk in the tank and allow the medication to work more effectively. It will also lower the pathogen count in the water and mean there are less nasties around to infect the fish.

Remove carbon from the filter before treating otherwise it will absorb the medication out of the water.
