I just have a quick question; how old do guppies start to breed? I've got a 4.5 month old batch and I'm just curious. I've heard you can tell the sex by about 6 months, is that correct? Thanks

Laura

It all depends on how quick they develop. I can sex my fish in 6 weeks or less-and the males seem active once you can sex them-Ive never had any females drop fry that early-maybe 2 to 3 months i would say is more realistic-although you say youve had yours for 4 and a half months. I thought you would have had some fry by now-Are you sure they havent been eaten and you havent noticed.

You can sex guppies pretty easily around 6-12 weeks.

They will breed as soon as the gonopodium has developed (this is about a month but may take longer - especilly when it comes to visibility)..

Females can breed at anywhere from 8 weeks onwards but its very rare they do that early and even if they do, the fry rarely survive.

Thanks guys; do either of you happen to have a photo of young male vs. young female? I'm just having a hard time telling them apart...

Laura

males have a gonopodium, females have a anal fin.

Steady, you love that guppy girl don't you! That photo... lol

It depends more on physical size than on age - if their diet isn't adequate or they're growing really slowly, they might be well over six months before they are large enough to drop fry. Usually young females only have four or five - but imagine four or five newborn fry stuffed into her. Would they fit comfortably? If not she's probably not ready to have fry.

I have it saved on desktop cos i know it always comes in handy

LOL! She yours?
I'd kill for one like that. The guppies round here are hopeless cases. I haven't had any in the last few years that can last more than a few weeks, even in perfect water. I gave up and put bettas in the tanks... I can get some decent ones that don't die on me!

I have a couple exactly the same, but that one in pic is not mine no, i found it on net and it comes in handy to show ppl pregnant guppy and other stuff lol.

I have a female just like that but its tail is black and yellow :)

Some of my fry look just like her!

Having trouble sexing them though :(
