Could be a case of fin rot. Was it all the sudden one day just gone or did it slowly deteriorate?

What else is in the tank?
WHat are your water stats in ammonia, nitrate, nitrite?
Did you cycle the tank?

tank is about 5 year old, currently houses, 5 sae, numerous corys bronze and one albino, pair of breeding bn plec and they off spring, 50 moscow blue guppies, one otto, one tiger plec, think that it, its 50 gal fluval with external 305 filter, tests a few days ago were, nitrites 0, nitrates 50 (40 in tapwater)
ph 6.4 it doesnt look like rot, its a straight cut, would a sae do this, or the other males bullying ??? he swims really well considering he has no tail, di

another idea could be mal formed and just grown like that, ? di

If i remeber right, SAE get very vicious! You tank appears to be over stocked. I would get rid of the SAE's and the otto and the Tiger Plec.

I dont think the tank is overstocked at all, only one of saes is fully grown the other are tiny, most of the guppies are fry and are all going once its warm enough, the tiger plec is about 3 inch long and 5 years old, dont forget the sae's, ottos and corys only eat algae or detris waste. But i also think its the one large sae i have, but i wouldnt have thought he could that much damage. di
