makes sense then, i have been having a nitrate spike which i cant seem to control...

You're sure you mean nitrate? Nitrates can be high and still not cause too much of a problem. We usually say under 40 or so.
It's NitrIte you need to be careful of. Ammonia aswell.

Again, it is Nitrates, or Nitrites? Water changes are going to help, unless it's in the tap water, but I don't think so...

nitrates are spiking between 20-50ppm

That amount of Nitrates shouldn't cause a problem, test your water from the tap. Add some melafix, and if the tap water is the root of the problem you may need to do something about that...

but i have had the tank running for a while now, and no problems....till now. so i dont see how it could be the tap water.
Well, how often are you cleaning the tank? I don't think it's out of the ordinary for water parameters to fluctuate in tap water, especially something like that. I would check the tap, that would be my guess.
