HI

im new to keeping plecs and i bought a clown plec 2 weeks ago. it annoyed me when it hid all the time and then i asked some one and found out that most are nocternal. So i have a plec in the tank which i cant see till the main light goes out or when cleaning tank.

so my question is .... is there a plec that is, not nocternal, dosent grow big, not shy and not expencive. sorry if im sounding fussy but i dont know that much on plecos.

please reply

nope :(

I have 2 tanks full of the most expensive fish I'll ever own - and they look empty to look at :)

you'll find that you caa bring them round to your way of thinking though... feed during the day when the lights are on and try to let them get used to people being about as much as you can ;)

agreed, sign me up for the i spent loads of money on fish that you don't see much at all club.

tank bred bristlenose perhaps?

ok. well i might have to go for another type of catfish  and ill try to make my clown pleco more timid.

thanks a bunch

Not all would agree but experience tells me that the more comfortable you make you plec, ie the more hiding places you give, and the more gloomy you make will mean you see your plecs more often. It's not a golden rule but giving a fish the right enviroment, decor and lighting wise can often make a fish more comfortable in it's surroundings so you see it more often.

Plus it often takes plecs a few weeks to become comfortable in a tank so to not see it at all right now is quite normal.

kool. thanks. well ill give it ago and theres plenty of caves for it to hide in.

does any one recormend a catfish which would be seen more which is still pritty cool? and dont grow big because only have a small tank up and running at the moment

By catfish do you mean, any catfish at all or another plec?

What are the dimensions of the tank and what other inhabitants do you have?

Yep. I havent even bought my first plec yet, but ive read loads about them. One thing that crops up quite regularly is providing a tank close to what the plec experiences in its natural habitat. I myself have my tank setup like this - lots of driftwood cover, a few tough plants, floating plants above and so relatively low light. If they prefer the night then tailor your tank to that. Just make it safe and secluded for your plec and give him some time. :) I think you have got the right idea.

I gather that Ancistrus is a good choice for a more visible plec. I myself am looking at the L144, L183 and the Tamboensis.

All the best.

Stephen.

agreed - lower lighting and lots of over hanging wood and plants will help.

(low light plants due to the low lighting)

Hi,

I have bristlenose plecs, which don't grow big, and mine are out quite a lot during the day!

Failing that - position caves and wood in places where you can still see them if they hide!
